Blazing Saddles (1974)
| I didn't see a lot of classic westerns as a kid, so this film may have helped shape my current fondness for the landscape of the American West. The theme is sung by Frankie "Rawhide" Laine. Infamous cowboy dinner campfire scene. |

Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

| Now, this is a MOVIE! Beautiful cinematography, the sweep of history, and what acting! T.E. Lawrence, a hero, a legend, humbled by his horrible treatment as a Turkish prisoner... Is this film a judgement of this man, or does it deify him? Glorious! |

Midnight Express (1978)

| Film-makers really have been very cruel in their depiction of Turkish prisons. This film caused quite a debate...Realistic film about an American wrongly imprisoned in a foreign country, or anti-Arab diatribe? Based on the "true" story of Billy Hayes. |

Dumb and Dumber (1994)
| I didn't have very high expectations for this film as I entered the theater (how could I, with that title?). But this is a work of art, in its own way. One scene was so excruciatingly funny I almost squirmed right through my seat. |

Pulp Fiction (1994)
| A film of many excellent scenes woven together into a neat circular narrative. Not to be missed are the ones in which Christopher Walken explains the importance of The Wristwatch, and the one where Ving Rhames finally catches up with Bruce Willis only to wind up pledging a "medieval" act of vengeance on someone else. |
Candyman (1992)
| Moody score by Philip Glass. Excellent acting. Urban legend Candyman haunts a voluptuous grad-student who is researching his story. People around her are brutally murdered, and she becomes the prime suspect. Cruelly and clinically processed for police custody, she's victimized by the law as well as the titular myth. |

Deliverance (1972)
| Are American mountains as creepy and dangerous as American swamps? Well, in the swamps the Cajuns make sausage out of swine. In the mountains, swines are made out of men. |

Last Tango in Paris (1972)
| Is this about the loneliness of sexual freedom? Alienation through intimacy? Whatever it is the film also explains why the French consume so much more butter. Well, butter's better for you than trans fats! |

| As the Germans destroy Warsaw during WW2, a group of surviving resistance fighters have no choice but to descend into their city's very bowels, the Kanal, the sewers. Will they ever again see the light of day or will they be flushed out and killed? |

Pink Flamingos (1973)

| How can Barry Levinson's Baltimore and John Waters' Baltimore co-exist in the same universe? I live in Baltimore and even I'm not sure. Now that Schwarzenegger is Gov. of CA, I'm thinking of starting a "Draft John Waters" campaign for MD Governor. |

Hannibal (Disc 1 of 2) (2001)
| This should've been Ridley Scott's 1492, because of the Spanish name for Columbus. But it isn't out on DVD, and it wasn't as good as Aguirre anyway. Hannibal depicts action at the opposite end of the GI tract. |

Edward II (1992)

From like-minded cineASSte LSteele: "The title character is famously assassinated with a hot poker!" OUCH! |
Pecker (1998)

Also from LSteele: "Addresses the concept of the bedtime dutch oven, i.e. when one partner farts and holds down the covers so that the other partner can't escape. Hmmm, I guess I don't get out enough." Well, at least try to get out from under those bedcovers, hon! ^_^ |
