You've seen this. I just wanted to make sure you look at JHeneghan's list because I'm not gonna duplicate it. This is a bloody but excellent anime movie. Great for people who like to go Saito-seeing!

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (1998)

Serious, important film. Best of the Mamoru Oshii films, probably because he didn't direct it. Retro alternate-history modern Japan. Looks political, but really a personal tragedy. Little Red Riding Hood. Evocative music by Kanno-hubby Hajime Mizoguchi.

A fun film with great production and music. You don't have to know the manga and OVA series to enjoy this, but it might be good to take a quick look at an OMG fan site to learn who the characters are.

A pretty and thought-provoking shoujo fantasy OVA series. The stories are told out-of-sequence, so there's some exercise for your brain. Great magical battles.

Another classic shoujo OVA. Based on a great (and longer) manga series, nice combination of SF, romance, and ESPer battle action. Probably had a big influence on the X series by CLAMP.

OK, this is mecha-centric, but also a love triangle woven in, and a virtual pop-star named Sharon Apple sings a lot of songs by Yoko Kanno and her posse before trying to conquer the universe. A must-see for a well-rounded anime education.

Also mecha, but the Patlabor franchise ain't about the robots. My favorite of the Patlabor movies.

Devoid of humor, or any exploration of true human feelings. Good for Oshii fans, though. Political intrigue.

Another Patlabor film, not as good as #1 and the TV show and OVAs. (SPOILER: Man-eating monster with big boobies, the only one to ever appear in the Patlabor franchise!)

Fans are split on whether this movie recap of the TV show is as good or better compared to the original 8 volume series. I prefer the TV series, but this might be a good intro to the world. Shoujo fantasy AND nasty mecha AND Kanno music!

Pretty much the same assessment as the Escaflowne Movie. If you're not sure you can get into the weird dueling reality that Utena lives in, here's your chance to see it all in one shot. If you like it, watch the TV series, too.
