Films to cure one of optimism
List creator: sappho
Created on: September 18, 2002 - 12:00 AM PDT
Description: What follows are films that will leave you depressed if you started out in a good mood and cause you to stay in bed for a few days if you're depressed to begin with. Not that these movies are bad...they are just big old wet blankets.

Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Not Rated
A great movie that starts out somber and escalates into complete melancholy. This is number one on the list of "downer" movies.
Wit (2001)
Watched the first hour of this and it was so unbearably sad that I didn't finish it. This film is akin to peeling onions.
Apocalypse Now (1979)
One of my favorite films of alltime, but a complete misery inducer as well. Not the kind of movie that you can turn off and avoid thinking about.
The Laramie Project (2001)
Not Rated
It's all true and very disheartening. A great film but a real downer, but how could it not be?
Boys Don't Cry (1999)
I left the theater during this one. So disturbing. So disheartening. So depressing. Clings to you like static and hard to shake off.
American History X (1998)
Hearts and Minds (Criterion Collection) (1974)
9/11 (2002)
