Hippie Dippie: Far Out!
List creator: sappho
Created on: October 17, 2002 - 11:51 PM PDT
Description: Films about hippies or films that illustrate the hippie ideology. Music, activism, psychedelics, peace, harmony and dissent! Get out your bellbottoms and take to the streets! I wish the "Cockettes" was out on DVD, because it would be at the top of my list

Mondo Mod / The Hippie Revolt (1967)
Not Rated
The first film Mondo Mod was a total kitsch-fest, but The Hippie Revolt was a riveting slice of life from San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury scene.
The '60s (1999)
I LOVED this film. Originally a mini-series, this film takes you on a journey through the ups and downs of the 60's. Incredible performance by Julia Stiles. Now, I am dying to see the sequel: "the 70's" if it ever gets over it's short wait.
Berkeley in the Sixties (1990)
Not Rated
A must see for all activists. This film is a trip in the way-back machine to a time when Berkeley was beginning to break some serious ground. See why California was and still is always at the helm of progressive politics!
The Grateful Dead: View from the Vault III (1990)
Some great live performances from before we lost Jerry.
John & Yoko's Year of Peace (2000)
A Documentary about the summer of 1969 when John and Yoko stayed in bed to promote world peace. A great glimpse into the life of John Lennon. I had a greater appreciation for him after seeing this film. Can someone stage a love in right now? We need it!
John Lennon: Imagine (1988)
Documentary biography of John Lennon. Lots of rare material and goodies in this one.
Woodstock: Three Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut) (1970)
FOUR HOURS of peace and music. This is probably one of the best documentaries from the time period. A look into the music, the lives and the philosophy of one of the most original and important movements of our time.
Jimi Hendrix - Live at Woodstock (1969)
The complete Jimi Hendrix performance from Woodstock. You won't get the whole performance on the original Woodstock Documentary. A must see for Hendrix fans.
Bob Dylan: Don't Look Back (1967)
A documentray that follows Bob Dylan on the road. An intriguing look at the man behind the music, and in my opinion, one of the best rock star documentaries to date.
Hideous Kinky (1998)
Alot of the hippie ideology can be found in this film. Kate Winslet plays a free-spirited woman on a journey of self discovery in Marrakech. Great visuals and an intriguing story line.
Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)
I can't help but view this film as an all out hippie interpretation of the life of Jesus. One of my alltime favorite musicals, this original film version is amazing and a classic film of the 1970's.
Almost Famous (Original Theatrical Version) (2000)
One of our more recent films focusing on the 1970's. I really liked this film and since it was autobiographical it interested me much more than if it was just some hollywood shtick.
Hair (1979)
Oh, come on. You can't get anymore hippie than Hair! I don't think too much of an explanation is necessary.
Easy Rider (Criterion) (1969)
Wyatt and Billy hit the road in this ultimate portrayal of hippie life. The details and undertones of this film accurately reflect the period. One of my new favorite films actually.
Alice's Restaurant (1969)
Free love, peace, politics, Vietnam, the draft: it's all inside. Hey, it was named after Guthries anti-draft song of the same name so that gives you a pretty good idea.
Joe (1970)
I am amazed at how relevant this film remains today, especially in the light of current events. The counter-culture faces off against the mainstream in this chilling portrayal of opposing sides.
Steal This Movie (2000)
A wonderfully acted and very realistic portrayal of Abbie Hoffman, one of the most fascinating activists in recent history. Not to mention, Janeane Garofolo is amazing in this film.
Conspiracy: The Trial of the Chicago 8 (1987)
Not Rated
Taken from actual trial transcripts, this entire film is a re-enactment of the trial of the Chicago 8...a group of activists that were accused of inciting a riot in 1968. This film made me so incredibly angry I'm suprised I didn't break my television.
The Doors (1991)
Val Kilmer does a pretty good Jim Morrison in this biography of the Lizard King.
The Doors: The Doors Are Open (1968)
A short film that features highlights from the Door's 1968 concert in London. Too short for my tastes but certainly of interest to major Doors fans.
Malcolm X (1992)
A biographical drama based on the live of Malcolm X. Great acting. Great cast.
Free to Be...You and Me (1974)
A childrens program that will appeal to anyone who follows the beat of their own drum. This film must have been groundbreaking at the time it came out. We need childrens shows like this today. This is still one of my favorites.
Butterflies Are Free (1972)
The entire film takes place in San Francisco's Haight Ashbury of course it's going to make this list! I haven't seen it yet but I can't wait. It looks great and has gotten some excellent reviews.
Message to Love: The Isle of Wight Festival - The Movie (1996)
A documentary focusing on the 5 day rock and roll Isle of Wright festival. Haven't seen it but it looks similar to Woodstock and you can bet it's in my rental queue.
Headcandy: Sidney's Psychedelic Adventure (1997)
I have never seen this but since it looks pretty psychedlic I had to put this on my list.
The Helter Skelter Murders (1988)
Hippies gone bad. A mix of drama and documentary about the Manson family murders.
World of Sid & Marty Krofft, The: H.R. Pufnstuf Twin-Pack (1999)
Let's just say that these puppets are a real trip and are really hippie-licious and groovy.
Serpico (1973)
Al Pacino in one of his best roles as a hippie/counterculture cop.
Wildflowers (2000)
A beautiful and touching film that features some very interesting and left-of-center characters. Some older hippies or "leftover" hippies give this "modern film a very 60's/70's vibe.
Still Smokin' (1983)
The Cockettes (2002)
At last the Cockettes have arrived on DVD. One of my favorite documentaries!!
