This film brilliantly blurs the boundaries between the real and fictional self. Set in a men's prison, the inmates/actors perform a drama about a love story and murder from one of the inmate's past.
	Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)
An original script, fantastic performances, and an enegertic soundtrack make this one of the best musicals of all time.

This dark and dialogue-sparse Portuguese film is wonderfully disorienting as it follows a lonely young man looking for love. Brutal and uncompromising.
	L.I.E. (2001)
A moving and thoughtful film about a pedophile and his interest in a young boy who has recently lost his mother. A nice exploration of a variety of masculinities.

These short films are some of the best I've ever seen which deal with gay love and desire, especially "Touch," "Backroom," and "Chicken."
	Velvet Goldmine (1998)
This film will likely induce sensory overload. A compelling film about glam rock's liberating possibilities for gender and sexuality. One of the many films where Ewan McGregor shows his penis.
	All About My Mother (1999)
Definitely one of Almodovar's best films, It is emotional without being sentimental.
	Happy Together (1997)
Wong Kar-wai captures the loneliness, yearning, and violence of the relationship between two men in a foreign country.
	Seduction: The Cruel Woman (1985)
Visually spectacular examination of s/m as the erotics of pain and pleasure are philosophized on.
	Totally F***ed Up (1993)
Araki's films are often raw and over the top. This one is raw, but more restrained than most of his other films. Best line: "Love lasts as long as a shot in the dark."
	Criminal Lovers (1999)
An extremely erotic, if not disturbing, film about the murder of an Arab student.
	Water Drops on Burning Rocks (2000)
Based on an unfinished Fassbinder screenplay, Ozon creates a sadly funny look at love.
	Boys Don't Cry (1999)
There are many things that make this a remarkable film, in particular the performance of identity and the two lead performances by Swank and Sevigny. Swank won an Oscar, but Sevigny is equally compelling.

Defurne's films are visually sumptuous and passionately intelligent and tender.
	Close to Leo (2003)
While the plot ostensibly is about a young man's discovery that he has AIDS, it focuses on the physical and emotional closeness of family and friends. One of the motifs of the film is the importance of human intimacy and the necessity of human touch.
	In a Year with 13 Moons (1978)
Technically, this film precedes what in the late 80s is referred to as Queer Cinema, Fassbinder and this film have certainly influenced many filmmakers, queer or otherwise. This film is a masterpiece!
	Gods and Monsters (1998)
Ian McKellan portrays the openly gay director James Whale, who exudes charm, wit, and intelligence as he recalls the horrors of the First World War and his career in Hollywood.
