Description: It's a big (ha!) deal in our society when actors plump up for a role. Here's a list of some notable career-driven temporary weight gain.

Bridget Jones's Diary (Collector's Edition) (2001)
Renee Zellweger gained about 25 lbs. and went up to a size 14 in preparation for this role. She was paid over $3 million to gain it again for the sequel.
Monster (2003)
Part of the much-hyped transformation of Charlize Theron into a fascimile of Aileen Wuornos involved a 20- or 30-lb. weight gain. Less attention was given to Christina Ricci's 10-lb. gain.
Cast Away (2000)
First Tom Hanks gains 50 lbs. Then production stops for 1 year so he can lose the weight (and grow his hair) before filming the rest of the movie.
Frida (2002)
Alfred Molina gained 50 lbs. for his role as Diego Rivera. It's rumored that Benicio del Toro refused the role because he didn't want to gain the weight.
Raging Bull (Collector's Edition) (1980)
Robert de Niro gained 60 lbs. to play Jake La Motta as an older man. This was the most weight-gain for a role on record until...
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Vincent D'Onofrio gained 70 lbs. for his role as Pvt. Pyle.
Dogfight (1991)
Lili Taylor gained about 20 lbs. for this role, but she also wore a padded suit.
Muriel's Wedding (1994)
Toni Collette gained about 40 lbs. in just 7 weeks for the role of Muriel.
The Untouchables (1987)
While it wasn't 70 lbs. this time, Robert de Niro did go to Italy and ate lots of pasta to gain a few pounds to play Al Capone.
The Insider (1999)
Russell Crowe gained 30 lbs. for his role as Jeffrey Wigand.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Sean Astin gained 30 lbs. for his role as Samwise.
Apocalypse Now (1979)
Marlon Brando claimed he put on 100 lbs. to prepare for his role as Kurtz. Is this true? The world may never know. (But Coppola lost 100 lbs. during the long and arduous film shoot - conservation of mass? Who knows.)
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
Elden Henson filmed the "sane" Lenny scenes, and then gained 20 lbs. in one month to play the "crazy" version of his character.
