"Vampire movies" versus "movies with vampires"
List creator: sethbecky
Created on: August 3, 2004 - 4:24 PM PDT
Description: Vampire movies are about seduction/conversion to evil, about power, and/or about the tangibility of evil. Usually all three. Movies with vampires use bloodsucking, immortal characters as foils, exposition, and/or action. I like both.

Cronos (Criterion) (1993)
Vampire movie. A device makes you immortal, but you crave blood and become addicted to using it. Ron Perlman wants it for his father, our elderly hero has it and has to use it to live. His insightful, 8-year-old granddaughter is caught in the middle.
Blade (1998)
Movie with vampires. Fun action flick where "vampire" means "only Blade cam go out in the day" and "they get to do superhuman stunts." No reason thi couldn't be aliens, super-soldiers, or anything else, but that isn't how the comic was written. Still a fun movie. Plus, vampire movie legend Udo Kier in a small role!
The Hunger (1983)
Vampire movie: Love, lust, and undeath overwhelming fear, morality, and the horror of inexorable madness. Powerful metaphors for relationships, aging, death, and loneliness.
Innocent Blood (1992)
Movie with vampires in it: This is a copy/mob movie the added threat of a growing population of super-mobsters. Replace it with a super-serum and nothing changes. It's fun, though.
The Lost Boys (1987)
Both: The brothers have two entertwining storylines, one about being accepted into a group of powerful friends when you need it most and one about action and comedy, and the fears children face when their divorced parents start dating. That's why this is such a brilliant movie: it works as several types without losing the funny.
Fright Night (1985)
Vampire movie: Yes, it's silly and cheesy and funny. And Roddy McDowell is fabulous in it. But the story is about a boy saving the girl he loves from the seductions of an older, more attractive, powerful man who tells everything she wants to hear. That he's undead just underscores the fundamental difference between vampire moves and movies with vampires
Modern Vampires (1998)
Movie with vampires in it: At first, this seems like a vampire movie: Van Dien is fighting against his vampiric nature and his offspring is using seduction as her only weapon. But nothing about this is different from a mob family drama. It is, however, one of my favorite movies. After all, it has Natasha Lyonne! As a bisexual vampire, even.
Requiem for a Vampire (1971)
Not Rated
Vampire movie: Younger vampires and vampire-wannabees threaten and try to kill two innocent-ish girls. The ultimate encounter with the elder vampire is touching and charming.
Night Watch (2004)
Movie with vampires in it: This is a fabulous movie. It has lots of vampires. But they're just one type of supernatural entity and not a very important one to the story. The long-term story does involve whether the young vamp embraces his undeath, but not here and not even in the sequel.Take the vampire tag off of this one. See the movie. Read the book.
Valerie & Her Week of Wonders (1970)
Not Rated
Neither: Yes, there is a vampire, but that doesn't make it either. This is a fable about maturation and a beautiful faerie tale. Well, well worth seeing. But the "vampire" tag doesn't belong on it.
Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary (2002)
Not Rated
Vampire movie: Amazing version of Bram Stoker's Dracula performed by the Toronto Ballet and filmed by Guy Madden, reblocked for filming. It's Stocker edited as the story should be for film and seen as dream-like and phantasmagorical. One of the only movies to see vampires as both monsters and projections of ourselves.
Underworld (2003)
Movie with vampires in it: I think this tried to be a vampire movie somewhere along the line, but the call to add more CGI fight scenes is hard to resist, so we got a passable action flick with the best-ever (to that date) "landing after a long fall" effect.
Vampire Hunter D (1985)
Not Rated
Vampire movie: It takes a while to find out why, but this is all about D defying the strong compulsion he feels from his heritage. Very fun anime.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000)
Movie with vampires in it: A bus of vampire hunters with UV spotlights and cross-shaped windows doesn't mean it can't be a vampire movie, but this one isn't. It is, however, a fun anime. No need to see Vampire Hunter D to see this one.
Near Dark (1987)
Vampire movie: The word "vampire" is never used. Undeath is never mentioned. But it's one of the best vampire movies around. Great action, great mix of good, evil, and in-between characters and a hero lured to love the evil side as fast as he's driven to work with it to survive.
Ultraviolet (2006)
Not Rated
Movie with vampires in it: Actually, it's crap with some neat SFX and Milla Javovitch wasting her actual talent (as a singer) even more than usual. There are kind of some vampires. And nearly infinite numbers of guns. And gravity-changing belt buckles. And sunglasses that failed to produce marketing tie-ins. And people fleeing their theaters worldwide.
Two Orphan Vampires (1996)
Not Rated
Neither: This is a movie about two vampires finding their place in the world. Two pre-teen, blind, undead girls wandering France and meeting other creatures and people. Another Rollins, but far from his lesbian vampire weirdness. Vampire is a type of otherness here, as are many other things, all different from one another.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)
Vampire movie: Our heroine is torn between two seductions: by her brutal and callous trainer and by the charismatic evil undead. Much better than the TV show which used the same setup. This version is Paul Reubens enhanced, and therefor superior.
Razor Blade Smile (1998)
Movie with vampires in it: It's a fun romp, from the first sentence to the last, and Eileen Daily is always enjoyable and attractive. The fact that they're vampires is important, and it is about the effects of undeath and immortality on a vampire's morals, humanity, and desires, but the action is front and center. Well worth a watch, though.
A Polish Vampire in Burbank (1983)
Not Rated
Both: It's a really cheesy no-budget comedy where the laughs come first, but the story is about whether our hero is willing to be a bloodsucker or not. It's not the morality that bothers him, though; it's the step into adulthood it entails. Vampirism as a metaphor for sex is old, but vampirism as a metaphor is the other side of that coin.
Vampires (1998)
  Movie with vampires in it
Vampire's Kiss (1989)
  Vampire movie
The Vampire Happening (1971)
Not Rated
Movie with vampires in it: If you have to ask why, I have clearly failed.
