The Bad Sleep Well (1960)

When will Criterion release this one? A sad, funny, and often thrilling noir from Kurosawa.
Bright Future (2003)

Tandanobu Asano is mesmerizing, as usual. I had to watch this twice, as the photography and style overwhelmed the story for me the first time.
The Demon (1978)
12345678910
No one does sociopath like Ken Ogata. This one will break your heart.
Ikiru (Criterion Collection) (1952)
12345678910
I can't imagine a better Shimura vehicle, but I keep hearing about "Life of a Horse Trader". Shimura moved effortlessly from Kurosawa to Gojira to Zatoichi, and all points in between.
Eureka (2000)
12345678910
Not Rated
A great movie to watch on a gloomy Sunday afternoon. Beautiful cinematography and great acting elevate this extremely slow-paced drama about a tragedy and its aftermath.
The Eel (1997)
12345678910

The low-key performances in this quirky drama are perfect. Great ending, too.
Twilight Samurai (2002)
12345678910

A stand-out performance from Sanada makes this one of best period pieces I've ever seen.
Pulse (Kairo) (2001)
12345678910
"Kairo" - closer translation is Circuit, which makes a little more sense. There are only so many places to keep the lonely souls.
Maborosi (1995)
12345678910
Without spoiling anything, this is another heartbreaker. A woman starts over, it's different, she copes, it's good. Addendum: Do Not Read the Greencine Description! It will ruin this movie for you.
