Anatomy of a Murder (Criterion) (1959)
Not Rated
The first known "Yooper" movie. A good story but also an interesting glimpse into life in the U.P.
Somewhere in Time (1980)
Truely beautiful movie set in Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel. Mackinac Island is all about history so it makes a perfect setting for this period piece.
Thou Shalt Not Kill...Except (1987)
Not Rated
Cheezy horror. Vietnam looks quite a lot like southeastern Michigan.
Roger & Me (1989)
A wonderful documentary that shows what happens when your smallish city is totally dependant on a large company like General Motors.
Hoffa (1992)
Ole Jimmy disappears right around the time they are laying the foundation for the Renaissance Center in Detroit. Coincidence?
Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)
Wasnt actually shot in Grosse Pointe as far as I can tell but it sure *looked* like Grosse Pointe. Kind of fun poke at the rich folk
Escanaba in Da Moonlight (2000)
This is a very silly but rather fun movie. Pokes a lot of fun at "Yooper" culture.
8 Mile (2002)
Yes, Detroit *really* does look like that. A somewhat fun movie that captures the real division between the city and suburbs of Detroit.
Super Sucker (2002)
Filmed in Jackson, Mi. Set in a fictional city that really is Jackson Michigan. I have been to Jackson and Jeff Daniels really did a good job with portraying the people and the location. Even the hair just screamed "JACKSON!" to me.
Renaissance Man (1994)
Lots of good shots of downtown Detroit including, the People Mover, the RenCen, and the fist. This movie has a bit of an "afterschool special" quality to it.
The Evil Dead (1983)
Not Rated
Not filmed in Michigan or set in Michigan but Sam Raimi directed it so it goes on the list.
Bowling for Columbine (2002)
Yuuuup. Those Michigan Militia folks live all around me. I am thrilled.
Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988)
I can see the old Tucker house from my front porch. It is the only movie I know of that is set in the town where I live...Ypsilanti
The Upside of Anger (2004)
Set in suburban Detroit. Has cameo by Arthur P of WRIF fame. Also has Kevin Costner wearing a "Mr. Stadium" t-shirt. I used to do my laundry there!
