The Oyster Princess / I Don't Want to Be a Man (1919)
12345678910
In "I don't want to be a man", Ossi Oswalda decides to dress and act as a man, for a while at least.
Chaplin vol.2
12345678910
Drag goes waaaaay back before Chaplin. But it is still surprising now that we think of him only as "The Tramp". Since all these early movies go by so many titles, I'm not sure if any cross-dressing one is here. The one called "Lady" here may be "Militant Suffragette" or "The Female Impersonator".
The Blue Angel (English Version) (1930)
12345678910
Marlene Dietrich. Even if you don't consider her performance as drag, it has been parodied by 1000 queens, including Danny Kaye in "On the Double".
I Was a Male War Bride (1949)
12345678910
Not Rated
Cary Grant in Drag! That's nothing compared to the French accent.
Glen or Glenda? (1953)
12345678910
Not Rated
  Shocking! Truly Shocking!
Some Like It Hot (1959)
12345678910
Not Rated
A classic. You must see this. Also look for "Fanfaren der Liebe", which this was based on and which deserves a DVD release.
Come Dance With Me (1959)
12345678910
Not Rated
Bridget Bardo is not, technically, a drag queen, but Phillipe Nicaud is.
Homicidal (1961)
12345678910
Not Rated
Thriller with Joan Marshall playing two genders.
The Producers (1968)
12345678910
Not Rated
  Christopher Hewitt as Marie Antoinette.
The Damned (1969)
12345678910
Helmut Berger impersonates Marlene, breifly but memorably. (Recommended by Eoliano.)
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (Special Edition) (1970)
12345678910
Features an over-the-top killer transvestite and amazing dialog.
Flip Wilson Show #1 (1970)
12345678910
Not Rated
Come back to the five and dime, Geraldine, Geraldine!
Myra Breckinridge (1970)
12345678910
Almost universally panned, but I love this weird, wonderful film.
Women in Revolt (1971)
12345678910
Not Rated
  Warhol factory girls.
Cabaret (1972)
12345678910
In here, life is beautiful! Also worth seeking out is the earlier, non-musical version "I am a camera".
Carry On Laughing (Disc 1 of 2) (1975)
12345678910
One example from the long-running "Carry On" series.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (25th Aniversary Edition) (1975)
12345678910
  Don't dream it, be it!
The Best Way to Walk (1976)
12345678910
Not Rated
Drag is shown here as an act of courage and self-acceptance.
Car Wash (1976)
12345678910
  Antonio Fargas.
Outrageous! (1977)
12345678910
This made a big impression on me when it was shown on the local public TV station when I was in college. A drag queen and a schizophrenic girl support each other emotionally. Ends with a great drag club routine.
In a Year with 13 Moons (1978)
12345678910
  Fassbiner tale of a transexual.
La Cage Aux Folles (1978)
12345678910
  Another classic. Must be seen.
La Cage Aux Folles II (1980)
12345678910
It is what it is: a somewhat entertaining sequel.
Can't Stop the Music (1980)
12345678910
  Butch drag is still drag!
Dressed to Kill (1980)
12345678910
Taxi Zum Klo (1981)
12345678910
Not Rated
Darker than most films on this list. The drag occurs at the end and indicates a character out-of-control, unwilling to live a 'normal' life. Be aware: the sex scenes are very explicit.
Angel (1982)
12345678910
  Greek Dragsploitation!
Liquid Sky (1982)
12345678910
"I can't have all these bodies!" Anne Carlisle is wonderful and sexy as a gay man. Great New York club-kid type costumes. My roomate and I watched this over and over in the late 80's.
Privates on Parade (1982)
12345678910
British humour with John Cleese. You could substitute any episode of Monty Python.
Victor/Victoria (1982)
12345678910
Classic. Highly recomended. Julie Andrews is magnificent as a Drag King / Drag Queen. (Remake of the German "Viktor und Viktoria".)
Tootsie (1982)
12345678910
Dustin Hoffman in drag! Another classic film.
The World According to Garp (1982)
12345678910
  John Lithgow in drag!
Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling (1986)
12345678910
Richard Pryor got started as a comedian by doing drag, as shown here.
Bachelor Party (1984)
12345678910
Contains a bit of drag, but really a placeholder for "Bosom Buddies", the 1980's TV sitcom with Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari in drag.
Before Stonewall (1984)
12345678910
Where would gay rights be without drag queens?
Hairspray (1988)
12345678910
The incomparable Divine. Of the John Waters films, this is the one least likely to offend delicate sensibilities.
Big Business (1988)
12345678910
Placeholder for "The Search for signs of Inteligent Life in the Universe", where Lilly Tomlin plays drag king Tommy Velour.
Torch Song Trilogy (1988)
12345678910
  Harvey Fierstein and Charles Pierce.
I Am My Own Woman (1992)
12345678910
Not Rated
Transvestism, not drag, but this will have to do for now as an example of Prof. Rosa von Praunheim.
Paris Is Burning (1991)
12345678910
No Hiltons were harmed in the making of this documentary.
Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
12345678910
Who could foget Miss Featherbottom, er, Doubtfire!
Vegas in Space (1993)
12345678910
"Glamour first, Glamour Last, Glamour Always!". Another of my favorites that some love some hate..
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)
12345678910
  Fabulous costumes!
Carmen Miranda: Bananas Is My Business (1995)
12345678910
Nothing says glamour like a fruit-bowl hat! This documentary is included because Eric Barreto plays Miranda in the fantasy sequences. If you only know Miranda as the fruit lady, you may be surprised by the talent revealed here.
Wigstock: The Movie (1995)
12345678910
Lady Bunny, Ru Paul, and others star in this documentary.
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995)
12345678910
Real drag queens are more interesting than these otherwise fine actors. Give them props for not being afraid of ruining their careers by acting in drag.
Brain Candy (1996)
12345678910
The Kids in the Hall movie. Plenty of funny drag in the tv series as well.
Not Love Just Frenzy (1996)
12345678910
Not Rated
Disco Bloodbath 1996! Wild and fun. Reminds me of both Party Monster and Women on the Verge....
The Birdcage (1996)
12345678910
English-language remake of La Cage. Pretty faithful to the original.
Bent (1997)
12345678910
Mick Jagger makes a rather handsome woman.
Killer Condom (1997)
12345678910
Not Rated
  Bob or Babette?
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)
12345678910
  The Lady Chablis.
Ma Vie En Rose (1997)
12345678910
Really a story about gender identity, not drag, but it is so much fun!
Dame Edna's Neighbourhood Watch (1998)
12345678910
Not Rated
Frankly, I don't understand the appeal, but many do.
Flawless (1999)
12345678910
Phillip Seymour Hoffman in drag! Also Joey Arias.
All About My Mother (1999)
12345678910
One of many Almodovar movies to feature drag.
The Iron Ladies (2000)
12345678910
Not Rated
Gay, transexual and drag volleyball players in Thailand.
Before Night Falls (2000)
12345678910
  Johnny Depp in drag!
Sordid Lives (2000)
12345678910
Oh brother-boy, what art thou? Leslie Jordan raises bad drag to new heights in this very low budget comedy.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)
12345678910
Transgendered rock-n-roll. Where can I see a version with Constantine Margoulis?
The Legend of Leigh Bowery (2001)
12345678910
Not Rated
He was his own special creation.
Nicholas Nickleby (2002)

The Cockettes (2002)
12345678910
Documentary of the legendary SF group.
Girls Will Be Girls (2002)
12345678910
You've gotta love Varla Jean Merman! Sadly she doesn't get to sing here and "Francesca Page" isn't on DVD. Plotnick and Leupp are also good in this very raunchy camp-fest.
Party Monster (2003)
12345678910
Marilyn Manson in drag! Wonderful costumes all around.
Martin Lawrence Live: Runteldat (2002)
12345678910
Placeholder for "Big Mamma's House". But don't be too disappointed that that isn't available here.
Sorority Boys (2002)
12345678910
Venus Boyz (2002)
12345678910
Not Rated
  Documentary on Drag Kings.

12345678910
Not Rated
  I'm speechless!
Breakfast on Pluto (2004)
12345678910
Again this is transvestism, not really drag.
Connie and Carla (2004)
12345678910
Mixed reviews for this mix of elements of "Some Like it Hot" and "Victor/Victoria".
Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005)
12345678910
Big Momma's House part 2. (Just kidding.)
Kinky Boots (2005)
12345678910
These boots were not made for walking.
