Jesus of Montreal (1989)
12345678910
A surprisingly entertaining and absorbing film - particularly in the first half (it does succumb towards the end to a bit more self-consciousness) - Jesus of Montreal rocks the establishment with wit, and passion - something that never gets old.
Felicidades (2000)
12345678910
Not Rated
not only a magical, often beautiful little film, it also takes on another layer of complexity in its portrayal of Argentina's decadence and subsequent economic fall.
Lantana (2001)
12345678910
Those seeking meaty, intelligent fare should give a look to this accomplished and underseen Australian neo noir.
Little Murders (1971)
12345678910
Unfairly obscure, the biting early 70s satire Little Murders, scripted by cartoonist and writer Jules Feiffer, holds up better than some other, more famous black comedies from the same era.
Pieces of April (2003)
12345678910
You're left with a feeling of warmth and redemption that the film entirely earns.
Les Carabiniers (1963)
12345678910
Not Rated
"Godard's fairly extreme expose on the stupidity of war, is one of his (and this is saying a lot) strangest movies; archival footage is mixed with the story of two idiots who become soldiers. It's dark, cold, and worthy of study for Godard fans." - from our French New Wave primer.
The Thin Red Line (Criterion) (1998)
12345678910
Was overshadowed by that same year's Saving Private Ryan, but without the latter's penchant for sentimentality, it comes closer to being a masterpiece.
Shattered Glass (2003)
12345678910
  Suspenseful and extremely provocative.
The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959)
12345678910
Not Rated
One of many renditions of this book, and still tops.
Ginger Snaps (2000)
12345678910
Not Rated
Fairly scary, but mostly it's wicked good fun. It's Heathers with a lot more bite.
Paris, Texas (Criterion) (1983)
12345678910
  A near-masterpiece, a sublime miracle.
Five Deadly Venoms (1978)
12345678910
Not Rated
One of the great, and unsung, martial arts films of the 70s.
My Life as a Dog (Criterion Collection) (1985)
12345678910
Seamlessly blends humor and tragedy in what amounts to an incredibly poignant coming of age evocation.
Out of the Past (1947)
12345678910
Not Rated
Truly quintessential noir, and will hit you like a slap in the face. And you'll like it.
Nothing So Strange (2002)
12345678910
A brilliant, unique and highly entertaining examination of how, why and what we choose to believe.
The Man on the Train (2002)
12345678910
Simple, elegant and darn near perfect.
Powwow Highway (1989)
12345678910
"one of the few films in recent memory to properly tackle the issue of modern day Native Americans struggling to maintain a connection to their past, without pandering... And it has Gary Farmer looming throughout like a gentle totem.
The Knack...And How to Get It (1965)
12345678910
Not Rated
Don't get your knickers in a twist: with Crawford surprisingly adept at physical comedy, the movie full of witty banter, and several ripping sight gags, The Knack has what it takes to give you a good time.
Take Care of My Cat (2001)
12345678910
Winner of several festival awards and anchored by a terrific performance by Du-na Bae as Tae-hee, Take Care of My Cat is an undiscovered gem.
In July (2000)
12345678910
Not Rated
  original and, ultimately, surprisingly deep.
The Apple (1980)
12345678910
Indisputably the worst musical ever made, The Apple may be rotten, but it's tasty all the same.
I'm Not Scared (2003)
12345678910
A terrifically entertaining and tense, even frightening work; a great example of how to correctly tell a story from one point of view, from the eyes of a young boy, without condescension.
Me Without You (2001)
12345678910
Lovely and underrated; one of the few of the spate of recent female bonding pictures to actually get that right.
My Darling Clementine (1946)
12345678910
Remains one of the finest Westerns ever.
Touching the Game: The Story of the Cape Cod Baseball League (2004)
12345678910
Not Rated
For a beautiful glimpse of baseball as it could or should be (and on the day of the annual amateur draft), this documentary goes right down the heart of the plate.
Doppelganger (2003)
12345678910
