Vote for Pedro (Almodovar)
List creator: Enc22

Description: He's a true original, and his films keep getting better. I would recommend starting from the middle (Women on the Verge) or doing a retrospective (Bad Education to his 1st film not on dvd "Pepi, Lucy, Boom and Other Girls". Watch "Matador" when availbl.

Talk to Her (2002)
A masterpiece. Winner of the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. It will challenge your ethics, it will make you laugh. Strong parts written for males (for a change) both Camara (Benigno) & Grandinetti (Dario) are awesome.
All About My Mother (1999)
Another masterpiece. Winner of the Best Foreing Film Oscar. Cecilia Roth gives an amazing performance.
Bad Education (2004)
His film noir tribute. Gael Garcia Bernal is outstanding as usual. The kind of film you keep thinking about after it's over, because (for a change) you have to put it together.
Live Flesh (1997)
Under-rated. Four great performances headed by Javier Bardem. One of the few films not written by Almodovar
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988)
Scewball comedy. Last film with Carmen Maura (until his latest one "Volver" for which the whole Female cast won the Best Actress Award at Cannes '06).
Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990)
Antonio Banderas & Victoria Abril are great. For when I though Antonio could act! Another film (like Talk To Her) with a strong male lead.
The Flower of My Secret (1995)
A little uneven, but very good. Alberto Iglesias first collaborartion with Almodovar, he has scored all his films since then.
What Have I Done to Deserve This? (1984)
Not Rated
Carmen Maura is a amazing. She plays a long suffering mother addicted to sleeping pills. Almodovar says that the character of the younger son comes close to him when he was that age. Chus Lampreave is very funny as the grandma. There's a whole sub-plot I would eliminate from the film, but, it's still very good.
Dark Habits (1984)
Not Rated
Not so good, but, with some good moments. Like most of his films prior to Women on the Verge, where you could see the potential he had to become a great director, but the stories weren't as sophisticated. Check the credits, and you will see that his brother Agustin (who also produces the films) has small roles in almost all of Pedro's movies.
Kika (1993)
My least favorite Almodovar. This film follows "High Heels" (not available on dvd for rental) and "Tie Me Up", but it's not of the same quality. It's violent, and lacks the usual great female performances.
