| The Name of the Rose (1986)

| Mysterious murders at an abbey have the monks assuming the prophecies of Revelations are coming to pass. A skeptical monk meddles Scooby-Doo-style and discovers a more rational explanation. This title would fit snugly on this list of atheist movies. |
| Citizen Ruth (1996)

| Well-executed satire masks it's true agenda. Citizen Ruth lampoons Pro-Life and Pro-Choice equally because it's really about the self-interested faux-compassion of the political tactic of posterchilding. Makes a great double feature with Thank You For Smoking. |
| Get Shorty (1995)

| A clever self-referential movie-about-a-movie that's more playful than Altman's similar film. A shameless pleasure for movie buffs who liked Scream or Brick. |

| I'd heard the buzz about the exceptional performances in this film, but I still thought I knew what to expect. After all, haven't Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher just been basically reprising these roles for most of their careers since? I did not expect these natural, nuanced performances that wafted authenticity and not a whiff of ham. |
| Scarlet Street (1945)

| A twisted rollercoaster narrative with all the requisite Fritz Lang themes: Vindication rarely comes from retribution; guilt dishes out harsher punishment the any judicial system; and well-meaning folks have a capacity for violence given the proper circumstances. |
| A Man Escaped (Criterion) (1956)

| It doesn't matter when or where it's set (WWII France), or why the man's imprisoned (he's a resistance fighter). This spare escape story is trimmed to its essence, and works as an allegory for any number of human conditions, as well as a purely thrilling suspense film. |

| An alternating cynical/hopeful view of the future from a 30's Britain that was simultaneously enjoying the technological advances of the time while nervously anticipating potential war. This classic sci-fi movie with its innovative set and costume design and special effects is a true time capsule. |

| I only rented this out of academic curiosity. I just wanted to see what history's first feature length animated film looked like. I expected something gimmicky and unsophisticated. Instead, I found a polished, elaborate, gorgeous work of art. |

| As far as sports documentaries go, this is no Hoop Dreams. It focuses almost exclusively on the athletes personal lives and shows very little footage of the actual sport. But, it's a fantastic sports movie with dramatic twists and compelling characters that couldn't have been scripted better. |
