GreenCine's Got it - Others Don't!

GREENCINE Announces Commitment to Its "Eclection," Furthering Its Lead as the #1 Online DVD Rental Service for the Alternative Scene

SAN FRANCISCO, June 3, 2003 -- GREENCINE (http://www.greencine.com), the leading online DVD rental service for the alternative scene, today announced their "We've Got it - Others Don't" campaign to increase awareness about the number of DVD titles GREENCINE carries that the other online DVD rental companies overlook. "We've Got it - Others Don't" kicks off by highlighting recent additions to the GREENCINE catalog of rare but popular DVD titles -- such as David Lynch's Eraserhead, the controversial Japanese cult classic Battle Royale and Marc Singer's acclaimed documentary Dark Days.

The company estimates that there are currently 20,000 film titles currently available on DVD, but the numbers are rapidly expanding. "In the past few years, a majority of home film viewers have switched from VHS to DVD because of the superior quality and the option for a more complete viewing experience," says GREENCINE managing partner Dennis Woo. "We see the online DVD rental service as the logical next part of that experience, and think being able to find your favorite film, no matter how obscure, should be part of that as well."

Whereas the latest blockbusters are readily available everywhere, GREENCINE noticed a steady stream of inquiries about the availability of other areas, such as foreign titles, independents, art house films and alternative genres. These films are often hard to obtain, and, in many cases, really expensive. "The average renter who would love to see such films has neither the time nor the money to seek them out and purchase them," added Woo. "In addition, specialized film buffs appreciate the chance to rent the film and see if it is worth their money before purchasing it themselves. We're filling the gap at both ends at GreenCine."

GREENCINE has been working steadily to find films of interest to its members, emphasizing important genres like Anime, Foreign, Classic and Indie. "We really pride ourselves on having this incredibly diverse catalog, with films from Iran, Poland, Korea, as many countries as there are making movies," noted Craig Phillips, associate editor at GreenCine. "We think of DVDs as entertainment that educate, and the catalog certainly reflects that." Phillips also pointed out how online services like GreenCine fill a gap. "We're proud that we can bring truly independent, artistic films to Americans who may live far away from the nearest eclectic video store."

The "We've Got It - Others Don't" campaign is aimed at both potential customers and current GREENCINE members. The campaign was started because several of the company's valued members began requesting hard to find or expensive titles, such as David Lynch's cult masterpiece Eraserhead, which is only available at a premium price directly through the director's Web site (www.davidlynch.com). GREENCINE, currently the only rental company to offer Lynch's first film to its members, has gone to great lengths to procure hundreds of other such titles.

With today's announcement, the company included the following list of ten most requested DVDs that are not available from other online rental services:

  • Cane Toads - A Documentary about sex-mad giant toads munching their way across Australia.
  • Dark Days - A groundbreaking documentary about a community of people who dwell in an underground New York City Railway tunnel.
  • Eel - An unusual and beautiful romance from Japan's Shohei Imamura.
  • Fudoh - Takashi Miike's dark, highly stylized yakuza flick.
  • Eraserhead - A "dream of dark and troubling things" that exists purely in a world all its own.
  • Grey Gardens - Sad but fascinating portrait of two unusual women who happened to be related to Jackie O.
  • F.W Murnau's The Last Laugh - One of the seminal films of the German silent era.
  • Criterion Edition of Monty Python's Life of Brian - A scathing, anarchic satire of both religion and Hollywood's depiction of all things biblical.
  • Psycho Beach Party - A purposefully campy spoof of unintentionally campy 60's beach blanket movies and 70's teenage slasher flicks, all in one hilarious package.
  • Zu: Warriors of the Magic Mountain - A phantasmagoric sword and sorcery adventure.

Every week over the summer GREENCINE will highlight more newly acquired, hard to obtain DVDs. "There will be something for everyone on the list," promises Giselle Geronimo, GREENCINE purchasing coordinator. "Everything from documentaries to Japanese suspense films to American indies, to some real obscurities. We've worked real hard to get these films, partially because it will please our customer base, partially because we're all film buffs here, too."

In keeping with their great customer-oriented reputation, GreenCine is tailoring their collection to the tastes of their members, often hunting down and purchasing titles that have been suggested to them by the members. Paul Wong, a new GreenCine member, recently wrote to the company, "A while ago I asked you about [the Hong Kong police actioner] Infernal Affairs and it came on Friday. I also implored you to stock Transformers the Heroes, and I got that too. Thanks Greencine. I am going to stick around."

With GreenCine's members constantly suggesting new, old, and interesting titles, the company is able to build a large collection of these in demand titles, saving its customers money on having to purchase import or out-of-print titles. GreenCine is an online DVD rental service that insists there IS accounting for taste.
