The stock characters are all here (the greedy politician! the know-it-all scientist! the useless love interest!) and somehow it all neatly fits together in this average eco-thriller. I'm surprised to find this was adapted from a novel, as the dialogue is often so juvenile that it borders on inhuman. What, though, to expect from a film called Slugs... Tedious cliched amateurism or madcap gore smash? Rarely, a film combines both to elevate it to the top of the cult ranks. This is not such a film. The effects are seriously nothing to get worked up over, although there is the spoilered scene mentioned in the imdb review above; however the patron's eye socket is filled with worms, not baby slugs. Zoological nitpicks aside, why does fake blood look so fake? Is it that expensive to do blood right? Anyway, the story moves along quickly enough, but it's the individual scenes that drag everything down to a... to a... snail's pace. You probably will find yourself laughing out loud as I did during many scenes, so for the unintentional hilarity factor, this scores a solid 8 or 9 - if sneering at this genre is half the fun for you, then this does come recommended. I mean, any scene between the male lead and the police chief will leave you gasping for air, as trying to assert their alpha machismo comes off about as threatening as strawberry shortcake trying to punish her pet mouse. Pretty much a waste for fast-forwarders, though the naughty among you will doubtlessly enjoy one particular scene...
