Intimate portrait of the epidemic

David Weissman's choice to portray the height of the SF AIDS epidemic through half a dozen interviews reminds those who were there of the horror & tenderness of the era. He picked a great articulate group of folks to interview who are all poetic & clear about their experiences. The younger viewers in the audience at the premiere found it a compelling of life before their arrival.

jimmy carter is an enormously principled politician, man & christian. but this film is generally a pretty dull record of his book tour--mostly shots of people walking around hallways with silence or ambient noise interspersed with middling interviews. you're better off reading the wiki about his book to understand the politics or watching the american experience episode about his life.

this is an interesting & eye opening film if you are unfamiliar with iranian culture. It's very well executed but pretty harsh outcomes for the gay characters.

Tom Wolfe's THE ELECTRIC KOOLAID ACID TEST is a much better intro to this amazing moment in hippy history which rippled out into the wider culture. the film is more for those who are interested in it not for a general audience.

I saw some of his bits on a variety show so I thought I would check him out. but the first 15 minutes are all about him acting out his rage including some useless & unfunny rape jokes. no thanks. turned it off.

Normally I love Hepburn & Tracy's witty banter but they haven't discovered it yet here. This is the only movie of theirs I didn't like. It's mostly propaganda against women working but it's also just very flat & uninteresting.

If you know anything about the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, this is a very funny meditation on life in the Occupied Territories. Some of the ironies are bitter but it is an amazing sign of how hope springs eternal that the director could frame the bitterness in the Occupied Territories in such a way as to turn it into absurdity & laughter. Also teases how Arabs screw each other over in their desperation. Fabulous music as well.

I think most Americans think they know enough about what happened and won't watch any of these kind of documentaries. But this and WINTER SOLDIER are edifying and harrowing. It's a bitter pill to swallow to try and learn from history but be condemned to repeat it collectively with and by all the administration bastards.

he is a talented filmmaker but this has very little dialogue just two rants at the end. It's a fascinating premise (zionism aside) but he makes it extremely dull.

the production values are mediocre. And the depiction of military life is pretty sanitized. It's pretty creepy to see stereotypes of gays & israelis as oblivious and privileged fulfilled.

This has really great early footage (from the 40s, 50s, 60s). I learned more American history that I didn't know from this video than anything I've ever watched. The interviews are even more damning since he just lets them be judged on their own words, no voiceover.
