...thanks to a brilliant screenplay and a genius performance by paul giamatti. unfortunately, this lovely gem was mucked by deficient cinematography-- at times looked like it had been shot in 16mm-- very distracting! i dont mind rough looking footage like in the dogme95 films, but here there was no reason for it, and no consistency-- just obvious flaws, particularly in some washed out exterior shots, or those horrid candles inside the restaurant. great movie anyway, but the DP should be shot or retrained as a sausage maker. watch it in spite of this, and think that in the skilled hands of someone like vilmos zsigmond it would have been, by far, the best film of 2004.
