while the title "cremaster" sounds like a cross between a kitchen appliance and a horror movie, this film is definitely not a kitchen appliance or a horror movie.

it is, in fact, one of the most challenging, baffling, beautiful, raw, and unsettling art installations i've seen.

definitely well worth your time if you're into bizarre performance art.
i love this film

so many things work together to make this film amazing. a great book adaptation, outstanding actors, (successful) experimental editing, groundbreaking score, gritty topic, everything.

i'm a big fan of not only hubert selby, jr (i have a signed first edition copy of this book) and darren aranofsky, but of composer clint mansell as well.

the OST is great in its own right... clint mansell released a requiem remix album about a year after the movie's release, and it's fantastic as well.

definitely give this film a rent.

ouch.

i like nerdy movies, but this one just fails on so many levels. okay, i can get past the shitty production and low budget of this 'film', but it still comes off as some crap hack film student project. the jokes are weak at best, it's impossible to give a crap about any of the characters, and worst of all, it's p a i n f u l l y s l o w.

people keep saying, "oh, but it's just so funny, ha ha", but it isn't. i almost get the impression that nobody REALLY likes it, it's just that you guys get off on being able to name some obscure work by a now-famous director, and only keep mentioning it because others do.

well the truth is out. the emperor is wearing no clothes, and this film sucks.

man, this was so not worth the rent.
what the hell

this film is great if you want to witness a bunch of comic-book character wannabes voiced over with some horrible british cockney voice-acting, prance around in an EXTREMELY slow plot with some beef organs and fake blood just so it will appeal to fourteen-year olds.

if you can get past the bad british voice-overs, which i eventually did, you're still faced with the fact that all the rest of the sound also sucks. the sound effects are all clips from the same stock cd all those crappy sitcoms and cartoons use. for instance, there's a scene in which a guy bumps a table a little bit, and you hear that sound where someone throws a bowling ball into a closet filled with tin cans that you hear in cartoons all the time. he does it again a few minutes later, and you hear THE EXACT SAME CLIP.

the film's description boasts, "see a severed face slide down a wall into a puddle of blood" or whatever, like it's a huge asset to the film or something. in reality it's a painfully obvious sculpt that will make you groan with it's cheesiness.

there are a couple gems worth seeing for their originality, but overall the film just tries too hard.

see it just to round out your movie experiences, but don't expect anything too great.
mandatory but pretty weak

like my title says, this is mandatory viewing for anyone even remotely interested in the genre. this film lacks, however, the wit, style, and overall quality of its successor, army of darkness.

in a bonus video feature the guys who worked on it pointed out that they basically had no storyboards for the film. it's painfully obvious.
it hurts to watch

this film contains a lot of good information about the history of marijuana in america, but it's very slow and damn is it ugly. the graphics and cheesy effects in this are a chore to watch.

and i was stoned, even.

it's getting by with my "4" rating only because it contained information which i didn't know already.
