One coast casts a skeptical eye on the other - and finds itself, perhaps to
its own surprise, to be in agreement with it much of the time. The New York Film
Critics Circle was founded in 1935 in part to counteract the insider politics
and provincialism of Hollywood, as reflected in the Academy Awards year in and
year out. But as long as the powerful New York Times critic Bosley
Crowther was in charge of the 13-member organization, the NYFCC's choices rarely
deviated from Oscar's.
In 1969, though, Crowther retired and things, they were a-changin'. There are
now about 30 members, writing for publications ranging from the NYT and
The New Yorker to The Village Voice and The New York Press.
Awards are announced in December and they used to be presented at Sardi's
restaurant, then the World Trade Center. Since 9/11, the presentations have taken place
in the Russian Tea Room.
