Adapted from the swordplay manga of the same name,
Azumi is essentially live-action anime.
Mark Pollard in
Kung Fu Cinema: "As a Japanese swordplay film, this has all the guts and glitter that is lacking in present Hong Kong action films. As one of the best action-heavy chambara films released in years,
Azumi is highly recommended." (2 discs; $19.45).
Clerks 2 ($21.95). Kevin Smith returned to favorite terrain with this higher-budgeted follow-up to his very indie hit. "Smith's most enjoyable film since, well,
Clerks, lacks much of its predecessor's outsider edge, but you'll probably be laughing too hard to care." (
Empire) Sean Axmaker
interviewed the film's co-stars,
Brian O'Halloran and
Jeff Anderson, this year, too. Also check out
An Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Even Harder; the evenings are usually funnier than most of his films.
Pandora's Box (Criterion). From Criterion itself: "One of the masters of early German cinema,
G. W. Pabst had an innate talent for discovering actresses (including
Greta Garbo). And perhaps none of his female stars shone brighter than Kansas native and onetime Ziegfeld girl
Louise Brooks, whose legendary persona was defined by Pabst's lurid, controversial melodrama
Pandora's Box." "The film that put Brooks on the map," wrote David Hudson in our
German Expressionism primer. The Criterion disc is, of course, loaded with fantastic extras.
Two war-themed films nominated for
Best Foriegn Film at the last Oscars are new to DVD.
Sophie Scholl: The Final Days is the tale of the young woman executed by the German government for being a member of the anti-Nazi White Rose student movement - played vivldy by
The Edukators'
Julia Jentsch. Adds
The LA Times, "her strong and graceful, quiet knockout of a performance is the film's most potent weapon." Also based on a real story, the moving
Joyeux Noel ($22.45) is "an extraordinary film... vital, immediate and human." (
SF Chronicle)
Forbidden Planet (50th Anniv. Ed.): Considered the sci-fi film given a large budget by a film studio,
Forbidden Planet (nominated for a Best Special Effects Oscar in 1957, and lost - to
The Ten Commandments!) is famous for being "that film with Robbie the Robot" - but it's much more. ...

Oldboy Special Edition. For the past few years, writer/director
Chan-wook Park has been treating audiences to thrilling and visually stunning cinema with his already legendary vengeance trilogy.
Oldboy, the second part of the trilogy, now has a 3-disc collectorÂ’s edition DVD set ($29.45) boasting 350 minutes of bonus material, including a superb featurette, "Autobiography of Oldboy," and some unique collectorÂ’s items giving the viewer unprecedented access to one of the most exciting films of this decade.
Certainly one of the odder films in a while,
Brothers of the Head is a mockumentary without the mock, a tale of conjoined twins who become a pop phenomenon. "More real and more artistically, morally, and spiritually honest than any dozen bedrock documentary films you'd care to name," wrote Marc Savlov in the
Austin Chronicle. In a new interview for GC,
Sean Axmaker talked with the film's risk-taking makers.
Wordplay's an engaging documentary about cross-word puzzle addicts and the people who keep them addicted: namely Will Shortz,
New York Times Crossword editor. Jon Stewart (at right), Bill Clinton, and the Indigo Girls are just a few of the more famous puzzle-doers to appear here in this "wry crowd-pleaser about [a] colorful subculture" (
AV Club).
Fallen Idol (Criterion).
Glenn Erickson, the DVD Savant, is high on the release of Carol Reed's classic: "a brilliant murder thriller... [a] shrewdly moralistic, complicated 'Boy Who Cried Wolf' story that investigates the way children and adults misinterpret and misunderstand each other." He adds that the transfer offers "a picture perfect presentation of this handsome B&W film."

Transformers: The Movie (Anniversary Edition). Remastered and fully loaded,
Transformers: The Movie ($15.95) makes it back to DVD 20 years after its premiere, in a 2-disc release with three versions of the feature film, commentaries and interviews, plus a sneak peak at the new live-action movie. That one will probably suck but the original is a fun blast of 80s nostalgia. "An entertaining spectacle in its own right" says
DVDTalk, the DVD is "highly recommended."
"If there were an ounce of taste left in Hollywood," wrote
Rolling Stone's Peter Travers of the indie drama
Down to the Bone in 2004, "the magnificent
Vera Farmiga [now seen in
The Departed] would be a front-runner for the Best Actress Oscar along with
Transamerica's
Felicity Huffman and
Walk the Line's
Reese Witherspoon. Yes, she's that good." Farmiga did win the special jury prize at Sundance, where
Debra Granik also took the Dramatic Directing award.
Rampo Noir ($18.60) is a reminder of the things that attracted many of us to Japanese exploitation cinema in the first place," wrote Jasper Sharp in
Midnight Eye of this adaptation of the works of mystery writer
Edogawa Rampo. "Its unabashed eroticism, its remarkable visual inventiveness, and its willingness to plunge into the dark realms that so many other movies fail to explore."
La Commune (Paris 1871):
Peter Watkins' epic, landmark film (3 discs; $30.95) is "spectacular," raved
Village Voice's J Hoberman. "Dynamic historical reconstruction in the form of an experimental documentary, Watkins's six-hour feature was made in DV for (and largely buried by) French TV; it's as much immersion as narrative - complicated yet lucid and contagiously exciting."
"Curious experience, this movie," wrote
Roger Ebert of
Jane Campion's first feature
Sweetie (Criterion) ($29.96), in 1990. "The first time I saw it I didn't know what to make of it... Then I saw [it] a second time, and suddenly there it all was, laid out in blood and passion on the screen, the emotional turmoil of a family's life." It's a challenging film, to be sure, but, Ebert adds, "it's the genuine article, and it's there on the screen in all of its defiant strangeness. Most movies slide right through our minds without hitting anything. This one screams and shouts every step of the way."
Hands Over the City (Criterion) (1963; 2 discs, $29.96), is a "fine treatment of an overlooked film" (Dave Kehr,
NY Times).
Francesco Rosi's work is an angry expose of Italian post-war corruption as well as being a richly composed film.
The social satire
Sólo Con Tu Pareja (Criterion; $22.46) was the first feature by
Alfonso Cuarón (
Y Tu Mamá También,
The Little Princess), made 15 years ago but just now out on home video. "A lively calling card from a young, ambitious director working with limited funds and a screenplay he wrote with his brother Carlos," wrote AO Scott in
The New York Times. "The promise he showed [here] has already been realized and exceeded, but there is something gratifying about witnessing such talent in its fledgling state."
Roger Ebert on
Lodge Kerrigan's indie film
Clean, Shaven (Criterion; $22.46) a few years back: "a harrowing, exhausting, painful film, and a very good one - a film that will not appeal to most filmgoers, but will be valued by anyone with a serious interest in schizophrenia or, for that matter, in film."
Also new: Sean Axmaker
talks with Kerrigan about
Clean, Shaven, plus his first feature,
Keane, and the film he shot in between,
Claire Dolan.
Kino's documentaries
Billy Wilder Speaks and
Edgar G. Ulmer: The Man Off-Screen (
$18.95 each) highlight two one-of-a-kind auteurs, one who toiled in relative obscurity while the other made one famous film after another. Both, these films prove, were equally important to film history as well as being fascinating characters. The
Wilder film is a rewarding hodge-podge of interviews, clips, rare photos and more, providing insight into the irascible director's mind, while the
Ulmer doc explores both the art and the illusion of the master of low-budget noir. (
We spoke to Ulmer's daughter about the documentary, too - which she produced.)
Prairie Home Companion is "the kind of picture
Robert Altman was born to make," wrote
Premiere's Claire Evans. "His famously light touch with actors pays dividends in freewheeling brilliance among this once-in-a-lifetime cast" - which includes
Meryl Streep,
Lily Tomlin,
Kevin Kline,
Lindsay Lohan and, of course,
Garrison Keillor, who adapted his long-running radio program to the screen. The DVD (
$21.45) adds an amiable commentary track from Altman and Kline (though one from Keillor would have been a nice bonus, too).
Reds (
$14.95): We've been waiting for
Warren Beatty's multi-Oscar winner to arrive on DVD for ages and then here it comes out a week ahead of schedule, with a lavish treatment.
Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos (2006;
$21.75). "Exceedingly well-made documentary - if anything, a little too polished," says GreenCine's
Craig Phillips "about the most dominant team in American pro soccer history, the New York Cosmos... [A] must for any soccer fan."
"More or less a video autobiography of one man's passion for making (and remaking) the genre films of his youth," says
DVD Talk of
I Was a Teenage Movie Maker, "a sometimes crude but mostly beguiling and sometimes quite charming documentary not necessarily limited to like-minded amateur filmmakers and monster movie fans." Besides the 40 minute documentary, these two discs include all 41 of
Don Glut's amateur movies.
The Maltese Falcon comes back to DVD in a packed 3-disc special edition (
$19.93) - packed because it not only contains a restored print of the famous version directed by
John Huston and starring
Humphrey Bogart, but also two other editions, one from 1931 and a more comedic 1936 film ("Satan Met a Lady"). A must for film buffs and Dashiell Hammett-philes.
Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos (2006;
$21.75). "Exceedingly well-made documentary - if anything, a little too polished," says GreenCine's
Craig Phillips "about the most dominant team in American pro soccer history, the New York Cosmos... [A] must for any soccer fan."
The Notorious Bettie Page (2005;
$20.98).
Gretchen Mol is stunning in this biopic of the elusive former pin-up girl.
Mary Harron's (
I Shot Andy Warhol) film shows her "as a young woman not so much naive as simply incapable of depravity," wrote Roger Ebert, very knowledgable on the subject. "The tone of the movie is subdued and reflective. It does not defend pornography, but regards it (in its 1950s incarnation) with subdued nostalgia for a more innocent time." But finally, Ebert adds, "Mol is the key to the mysterious appeal of the film, to its sweetness and sadness."

American Blackout (2005;
$10.95). Illuminating activist doc is "a powerful piece of political cinema that effectively documents the disenfranchisement of black voters in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections" (
Atlanta Constitution Journal).
Lady Vengeance (2005;
$18.60), a.k.a. "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance," is the concluding, and, we think, best chapter in
Chan Wook Park's Vengeance trilogy (
Oldboy and
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance were the others). "[Park's] most sullen and patient film," wrote Michael Atkinson in
The Village Voice, "and yet it's breathless pop filmmaking, narratively mercurial, viscerally traumatic, and thematically infernal."
Also: Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers (2006;
$10.95),
Robert Greenwald's urgently relevant new documentary;
Three Times (2005;
$19.93), "great cinema, pop romance that carries a special charge," says the
Chicago Tribune.
The Spirit of the Beehive (Criterion) (
$29.97). Back in 1999, Derek Malcolm wrote: "I once showed a dozen or so classic non-American films to students at the Royal College of Art. To my surprise, despite the fact that the list included the work of such world-renowned directors as
Luis Bunuel,
Satyajit Ray and
Kenji Mizoguchi, the film they fell in love with was Victor Erice's
The Spirit of the Beehive." "A wonderfully allusive and poetic account of childhood in Franco's Spain," (Peter Lennon,
Guardian UK), and long considered one of the great lost masterpieces, this truly beautiful film is now no longer lost, thanks to Criterion.
The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2005;
$19.95). "A one-of-a-kind cinematic experience," (
San Francisco Chronicle),
Jeff Feuerzeig's doc is a stunning portrait of a musical and artistic genius who nearly slipped away. "An imaginative and at times heart breaking tribute." (Salon.com)
Death of Mr Lazarescu (
$18.60). A pitch black comedy about Romania's archaic health care system? Sounds like a real treat, doesn't it? Not so fast. It's one of the best reviewed films of the year. "Both sad and darkly funny, the film is so sharply conceived and richly populated that it often registers like a Frederick Wiseman documentary, even though everything is scripted and every part played by a professional," raved Jonathan Rosenbaum in the
Chicago Reader. "A heartbreakingly powerful masterpiece," adds Peter Rainer of
The Christian Science Monitor.
I am a Sex Addict (2005;
$19.45).
Caveh Zahedi (who we
interviewed awhile back and now interviews
himself) made waves with this "breathtaking high-wire act that combines fact and fiction, drama and self-deprecating humor, honesty and self-delusion, home movies and animation" (Marjorie Baumgarten in the
Austin Chronicle). A "consistently witty and inventive lark," wrote
Bright Lights Film Journal. "Mischievous, and hardly the most reliable narrator, [Zahedi] presents this playful meta-vaudeville as part documentary, part dramatization with actors, and all narcissistic reflection on his life as a horndog."
Quickies: Dick Cavett: Hollywood Greats (
$30.95) features simply some of the greatest (and most enjoyable) television interviews ever;
Ballets Russes (
$23.45), the absorbing dance film ("gives you such an intense hit of creativity that afterward you may find yourself trying to jete out of the theater and into the street" - Michael Sragow,
Baltimore Sun).
Playtime (Criterion) (1967;
$29.97).
Jacques Tati's memorable follow-up (ten years later) to
Mon Oncle, returns Monsieur Hulot to a bafflingly modernist Paris. Tati's gloriously choreographed, nearly wordless comedies about confusion in the age of technology reached their creative apex with
Playtime. "The most visually inventive film of the 60s is also one of the funniest," wrote Dave Kehr in the
Chicago Reader. One to treasure. The new disc also includes
Cours du Soir, a delightful 1967 Tati short.
Godzilla: Gojira Deluxe Collector's Edition (1954;
$15.95). The star attraction of this new two-disc Godzilla set is the original Japanese cut of the film (the second version features the American theatrical release which added
Raymond Burr and a revisionist script). "A classy release that elevates the general stature of the
Godzilla franchise," raves the
DVD Savant, "[F]ans will be enthusiastic about the extras on the double-disc set." Extras abound on the second disc, so, Burr or no, don't miss it.
Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (1994;
$12.45). Another cult title making its debut on DVD,
Alan Rudolph's film transports us back to the 1920s of Dorothy Parker, the oft-quoted, witty woman at the center of the Algonquin Round Table. "What it tries to do it does so extraordinarily well," wrote Marjorie Baumgartner in
The Austin Chronicle, "and that is to capture a moment in time and look more closely at the scars hidden underneath the blue ribbons gaily camouflaging Parker's slit wrists.
Jennifer Jason Leigh's performance is so incredible that witnessing it is reason enough to take a look at this movie."
The Chinese film
Mountain Patrol (Kekexili) is a real sleeper, and unforgettable - all the more so because it's based on a true story. Set in Tibet where a small group of Tibetans struggle to protect the Tibetan antelope (chiru) from poachers,
Mountain Patrol is the rare ecologically-minded film that is extremely gripping rather than didactic; or, as Manhola Dargis wrote in the
NY Times, it's "as tough and unsparing as its backdrop, a blood-boiling environmental thriller with a dash of
Sergio Leone." The new DVD is not of the greatest quality in the world, but the film itself is highly recommended.
Seduced and Abandoned (Criterion) (1964;
$22.46). "Pietro Germi creates an incisive and wickedly irreverent satire on manners, duty, honor, and socially cultivated machismo," noted
Strictly Film School. And Dave Kehr: "Maliciously funny examination of the marriage rites of Sicily, done up in a crowded, cartoonish style that suggests the work of
Preston Sturges."
The Charles Bukowski Tapes (1987;
$17.95, two discs). Released to coincide with this month's theatrical release of the
Bukowski-based
Factotum (and the writer's birthday),
Barbet Schroeder's film was seven years in the making, the result this four hour-long study of the man and the music of his words. "The ideal way to show this material was in short video-clips - a new style of film," remarked Schroeder (who also directed the Bukowski-based
Barfly). "Once I had screened it this way, it seemed twice as powerful."
In a
noir-ish mood? Check out Kino's new
Dark Side of Hollywood set (
$37.45), five movies including the underrated
The Long Night,
Anthony Mann's tough, taut
Railroaded, and likely the best of the quintet,
Sudden Fear with
Joan Crawford, which GreenCine's DWoo called a "San Francisco treat." The box from Kino is part of "one of the best ongoing video series around," says
Images Journal's Gary Johnson. The latest will hit you like a good slap to the face.
Speaking of noir: Long out of print on DVD,
Double Indemnity (1944) is the "most important Film noir ever made," according to
Eddie Muller in his
article about the film for GreenCine - all the more reason why this special two-disc edition is cause for rejoicing.
Barbara Stanwyck is perhaps the ultimate femme fatale, and
Fred MacMurray, long before
My Three Sons, proves what a terrific actor he was, delivering the snappy dialogue (adapted for the screen by director
Billy Wilder and detective novelist
Raymond Chandler, from material by
James M. Cain). "Despite years of imitation and parody,
Double Indemnity never loses its freshness," writes Muller. "And make no mistake about it, everything you love about
Double Indemnity was drawn up in the script, which is a masterful example of the screenwriter's art." Extras include two separate new audio commentary tracks, one with film historian Richard Schickel, and a second with film historian/screenwriter
Lem Dobbs and film historian Nick Redman.
The caper spoof
Safe Men disappeared quickly from public view first time around, barely making it to theaters before being deposited on home video - in fact, it's just now making its way to DVD - but with a game cast and some hilarious comic moments, it's much better than that history would lead one to believe. The film utilizes to perfection the deapan talents of
Sam Rockwell and
Steve Zahn, well-teamed here as lounge lizards forced to pretend they're safecrackers to avoid being whacked by a Jewish mobster (
Michael Lerner), as well as
Mark Ruffalo (wearing a "sweet 'stache"),
Harvey Fierstein and
Paul Giamatti as Veal Chop, Lerner's put-upon toadie. In short order...
read the rest on Guru.
The James Stewart Signature Collection (
$37.74) offers up a host of classic Jimmy films that had never been on DVD, including
The Spirit of St Louis, in which Stewart plays Charles Lindbergh,
The Stratton Story, in which Stewart plays Monte Stratton, who overcame the odds and played baseball after losing a leg in a hunting accident, and likely the best of all the ones here, Anthony Mann's fabulous Western
The Naked Spur, with Stewart a bounty hunter on the trail, through the breathtaking Rockies, of killer
Robert Ryan, who has (hubba hubba)
Janet Leigh in tow. Jonathan Rosenbaum in the Chicago Reader called
Naked Spur "the most elemental Mann western and my favorite of all his pictures.
Brick (2006). The slangy, teen-noir is
Raymond Chandler reimagined for modern day Orange County, and, adds GreenCine's
Craig Phillips on Guru, while the film "takes a bit of time to get accustomed to - as if we, the audience, were collectively given a new eyeglass prescription and have to adjust to seeing a certain way - stick with it.
Brick is a breakout debut, and one of the best films of 2006."
CSA: Confederate States of America (2005). "I made it as a comedy because I want to reach the audience who would never go to see a serious film about slavery," said filmmaker Kevin Willmott in our
interview with him, about his alternative history film which posits the question - what if the South had won the Civil War? "A brilliant and irresistible counterfactual overview of American history," raved the
San Francisco Chronicle's Mick LaSalle, "Ultimately not just amusing but moving because it reminds us that the Civil War was not some sectional disagreement or an argument between two equally worthy points of view, but rather a struggle for the country's moral decency and the future of democracy."
Cavite (2005) was filmed for a song but had such a perfect concept for a low-budget film - one main character, shot on location in Manila, it was a "paragon of guerrilla resourcefulness and a model citizen of the global village," wrote Dennis Lim in the
Village Voice, "a more anxious and vivid experience than most movies with budgets literally a thousand times bigger... [an] impressively tense micro-thriller."
Richard Pryor Live in Concert (1979) features the
comic at his brilliant, raunchy best in this highly influential (and gut-bustingly funny) performance that hardly seems dated at all. This new DVD re-release is far superior to the previous one, too.
The Fifth Horseman Is Fear (1964),
Zbynek Brynych's underrated near-classic about an old Jewish doctor who has been forbidden by the Nazis to practice medicine, is "such a nearly perfect film," wrote Roger Ebert in the late 60s's, "that it comes as a shock, in the last ten minutes, to discover how deeply involved you have become. [It is] unmistakably the work of a master, and I can only wonder whether Brynych has made other films or if his ability is natural, as
Fellini's seems to be. I mention Fellini because this film seems to have what Fellini and very few other directors are able to achieve: A sense of rhythm." Highly recommended.
A Canterbury Tale (Criterion) (1944;
$29.97).
Michael Powell and
Emeric Pressburger never made a bad film in their many years of collaboration, and this reworking of Chaucer - reset in wartime Britain - is no exception. "Highly recommended," extolls
DVD Talk, "an enchanting cinematic parable that inspires and uplifts, reminding contemporary audiences of the struggles of the past and how they may reflect on the present and future." As to be expected from Criterion, the two-disc set is full of lovely extras and illuminating commentaries as well.
The Joy of Life (2005;
$18.10). Filmmaker
Jenni Olson told GreenCine's Tamara Lees: "I want to convey a sense of time and place and history. The underlying agenda of the film is to create a visual document of the changing face of San Francisco... It's also my hope that audiences will be inspired by the film's form and bring this way of looking at the world with them when they leave the theater." Poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti approved: "I was joyed," he told her in an e-mail. The film "makes the ordinary extraordinary" (Wesley Morris,
The Boston Globe).
"Perhaps the most anticipated DVD release of the day, at least in Region 1," notes DK Holm on the
GC Daily, "is Warner Home Video's
Film Noir Classic Collection Vol 3." The set (
$37.74) includes such rare treasures as
Robert Montgomery's first-person-POV-noir
Lady in the Lake and
His Kind of Woman, along with a
bonus disc containing a set of noir shorts.
Kino has just released its "Restored Authorized Edition" (fully re-mastered) of the 1922 silent classic,

Created by former Simpsons writer Mike Reiss initially as short attention span quickies, the new
Queer Duck: The Movie is a riotous good time. With Queer Duck (voiced by
Jim J. Bullock, natch) joined by Oscar Wildcat and Openly Gator, you know it's going to be irreverent (and full of bad puns); it's also raunchy, full of deranged show tunes, caricatured celebrities and genial humor. Other voices include
Futurama's
Billy West (doing his best
Paul Lynde impersonation),
Estelle Harris,
Tim Curry,
Mark Hamill,
Bruce Vilanch,
Conan O'Brien, and
David Duchovny. Quacky!
Edward Yang's
Yi Yi is one of the most beautiful and perfectly realized films to come from Taiwan. Nearly epic in length but intimate and always engaging, it's as lucid as many a fine novel in its portrait of the struggles of a middle-class family. Criterion's new edition gives the film the treatment it deserves, with a restored high-definition digital transfer, audio commentary by Yang and noted Asian-cinema critic Tony Rayns, and a new interview with Rayns about Yang and the New Taiwan Cinema movement. One to treasure.
Andrew Wagner's
The Talent Given Us "is a brave, funny, affecting film that follows his parents and two sisters as they drive from New York to Los Angeles, picking up a family friend in Iowa," wrote Roger Ebert in his 3 and a half star review. "All of this somehow adds up, as I wrote from Sundance, to a movie that is 'seemingly honest.'"
