James Longley's critically acclaimed new documentary Iraq in Fragments [watch a trailer here] opens in select cities nationwide beginning November 10. The film was called "a fascinating glimpse of an Iraq the mass media never shows us...a quiet revelation," by Newsweek. Hannah Eaves interviewed Longley (whose previous film about another conflict in the Middle East, Gaza Strip, is available on GreenCine), as well as producer John Sinno, earlier in the year. Don't miss this timely film!

Wordplay Rent | Buy
Engaging documentary about cross-word puzzle addicts and the people who keep them addicted: namely Will Shortz, New York Times Crossword editor. Jon Stewart (at right), Bill Clinton, and the Indigo Girls are just a few of the more famous puzzle-doers to appear here in this "wry crowd-pleaser about [a] colorful subculture" (AV Club).

And while you're at it, drop by Guru for a chance to win a copy of the DVD in our new trivia contest! Disc includes a booklet ofTimes puzzlers.
Fallen Idol (Criterion) Rent | Buy
Glenn Erickson, the DVD Savant, is high on the release of Carol Reed's classic: "a brilliant murder thriller... [a] shrewdly moralistic, complicated 'Boy Who Cried Wolf' story that investigates the way children and adults misinterpret and misunderstand each other." He adds that the transfer offers "a picture perfect presentation of this handsome B&W film."

What We're Watching
Transformers: Movie (Anniversary Edition) Rent | Buy
Remastered and fully loaded, Transformers: The Movie ($15.95) makes it back to DVD 20 years after its premiere, in a 2-disc release with three versions of the feature film, commentaries and interviews, plus a sneak peak at the new live-action movie. That one will probably suck but the original is a fun blast of 80s nostalgia. "An entertaining spectacle in its own right" says DVDTalk, the DVD is "highly recommended."
If you're a fan of the "outsider" genre, you might want to add Pizza to your queue because this little-seen surprise offers a double dose of "otherness": a very overweight high school girl (who could beat Welcome to the Dollhouse's "Weinerdog" at her own game) and a hunky, over-age pizza boy whose neon-ized delivery truck and outsized libido (he's got a member to match) are community legend... read the rest on Guru.

As Volver and the Viva Pedro! series roll out across the land, Michael Guillén tracks the ways in which Pedro Almodóvar "has fetishized the gendered body and glamorized gender variance, all in the name of Spain."
