In the tradition of The Blair Witch Project and Faces of Death, this German film distributed by Troma aims to leave viewers wondering if the horror onscreen is real or simply make-believe. There's a chapter in the sadly out-of-print book "Cut! Horror Writers on Horror Film" entitled "Disturbo 13: The Most Disturbing Movies Ever"...discussed are flicks such as "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer", "Men Behind the Sun", and "In a Glass Cage". If they ever put out a new edition of this book and re-write this chapter, this film would have to be included. Despite being a life-long horror film fan, I almost didn't make it through this one. The acting of the suicide "victims" is incredible, and I was actually questioning whether what I saw on film was real or not. I first found out about this film through a review on www.filmthreat.com, and their review is dead-on. The film was originally titled "Final Cut.com". The fact that it's been picked up for distribution by Troma makes it all the more remarkable. Check this out! |

Many people like to accuse films that use a certain film style (and we all know what it is) as being cliched. The reason for this accusation is the popularity of "The Blair Witch" project, a film that I personally love. "Suicide" appears to be that kind of film. Crazy, jaded camera movements while the camera person feverishly runs away.
The first 10 minutes of "Suicide" seemed like an excellent idea. Not likely a candidate for mainstream cinema but it's passive aggressive lead in showed great promise and than in suddenly fell flat on its face.
After that it's all predictable and the only understanding we have as to why our two leads are video taping people killing themselves is that it has something to do with a website and the underground snuff film market. The reasons why our suicide candidates "give in" are trite and that leaves us with no sympathetic character.
On a personal level it's difficult for me to condone this film as being a "good idea". I'm an advocate for the mentally ill and have experienced and attempted the subject matter on several occasions. Thankfully I've found help in the right places and even created a website for my disease, the non-for profit organization "project stigma" (www.projectstigma.org) but in the back of my mind I couldn't help but think on how much I wanted to improve this extremely dull and predictable film. So much so that I considered writing a remake.
I realized that I was confronting a personal and ethical moral issue which than made me think if that was what the film was all about. Can life really get that bad? That later lead me into an existentialist debate with my own demons and it bought me to my conclusion.
The film was a good idea but unfortunately it was too exploitative to show any sympathy. It lacked the moral and ethical issues and didn't even bother to question them, aside from the occasional "Is this legal?" from the cameraman.
So where does this lead us? Nowhere, "Suicide" is a pointless exercise in sensationalism. I'm sure it was well advertised and marketed in it's native country Germany; but all in all it leaves you as frustrated as the characters themselves.
It's not worth taking your own life nor is it worth wasting valuable minutes that you could have spent cleaning, fucking, masturbating or even watching something else. Don't loose those reasons to live on this preposterous movie. |
