It has been four years since the incident that has come to be known as the Twilight. Many of those who witnessed it no longer come to "The World". It's a different place. A safer place.
Shugo and his twin sister Rena are two of the newest players to join "The World". And they've won a very special prize in a contest - they get to use the character likenesses of the legendary Kite and Black Rose. Such a prize is very rare indeed, and it makes them the center of a lot of attention.
Among those wataching are mireille, a self-proclaimed "rare hunter" who has an obsession for finding rare items. And then there 's the mysterious Ohka, A drop-dead gorgeous woman who is as fierece as she is beautiful. And also among the onlookers is a figure from the past, Balmung of the Azure Sky.
As Shugo and Rena begin to discover what "The World" holds for them, it becomes very clear that they are not ordinary players. Unusual things keep happening around them, but they're too busy having fun to really worry. Its probably nothing. Probably.

Let me first say that I really liked .hack//SIGN, and liked the story of the PS2 games (the gameplay was not as good). I think they were trying to move in a new direction with this, but the end result is a show that badly fails. They try very had to include some comedy, but the comedic and dramatic elements clash badly. I'm sure there are many 4-yr olds out there that would consider this humor beneath them. Some of the moments are so stupid that it makes it difficult to take the rest of the story seriously. While the music isn't bad in this series, it certainly doesn't stand out like it did in SIGN either.
The english voice acting is mixed. Kudos to them for pulling in some of the game and SIGN voices to play their parts in the series. This however leads to confusion over a character that looks and talks exactly like Mistral, but isn't. I think Sandy Fox is great but her voice is very distinct...I think they might of been better off using someone else to avoid confusion. Of course if the character didn't look exactly the same it might avoid confusion too.
Despite some of the plot holes, the concept isn't bad. Unfortunately the execution leaves a lot to be desired. If you are a big fan of the series you will probably watch this anyway...lower your expectations and you might be ok. If not then ignore this and hope that ROOTS picks up where SIGN left off. |
