| ENVY is better than you may have heard. It features Barry Levinson's trademark low-key, deadpan comedy style applied to an over-the-top story--a combination that keeps the film from detonating prematurely. Stiller and Black work well together (the women's roles are not nearly as interesting, which is true in most of Levinson's work) and Christopher Walken carves another notch in his record of weird but memorable performances. Overall, the movie is weird, too, but it's never less than entertaining (and its "take" on infomercials is savvy and fun). This is not really a mainstream movie, however, so members more at ease with stuff like "Raising Helen," "Jersey Girl" (or many of Ben Stiller's other comedies) should probably look elsewhere. |
