This complex and confusing Spanish feature intercuts stories from 1936, 1940, 1970 and 1988, and has Victoria Abril play three different parts in them. The lives of many people are shown to be tangled together in nearly incomprehensible ways, and many of the characters are prone to engage in unsavory sexual acts involving fetishism and sadomasochism. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

| SI TE DICEN QUE CAI by longtime Spanish director Vicente Aranda ("Celos," "Juana la Loca") is quite a movie--in its way. Hugely sexual and sexually perverse (the initial sex scene, while quite a turn-on, is full of s&m and voyeurism) the film spans Spain from the 1930s through the 70s. While extremely political on some levels, what truly seems to attract this director is the sexual--with perverse sex equated with fascism and betrayal (not a particularly original idea). The performances are all good, and the politics are interesting, convoluted and layered with irony (it'll help if you have a handle on Spanish history). But sex overrides it all, and as with other of this director's films--whatever serious subjects are tackled--everything finally appears just a tad less memorable than the rutting. |
