The premise of Gravitation is that love happens with the force of gravity regardless of consequences. Shuichi falls in love with a man, not because he is gay, but because he encounters someone he must love, regardless of whether that person is male or female, or even polite. (This is a common plot device in this genre - more obstacles, more fun, right?) Visually upbeat and over the top, but there are some dark undercurrents also.
Can Shuichi thaw Yuki, the ice king? Can Yuki stand to live with a guy who goes chibi at the drop of a pink bunny? Viewers need not worry about seeing anything more graphic then a kiss. This series is based on a manga (Japanese graphic novel) which is available in the US in an english translation. You may find the anime more satisfying if you read the manga. The two art forms complement each other. The music in Gravitation is wonderful, the animation is rather limited, but the guys are beautiful! |

Occasionally it's refreshing to watch an anime without mecha, aliens, supernatural powers, samurai or tentacles. Gravitation is the story of the incredibly genki Shuichi Shindo, a young musician determined to succeed in the music industry. The plot follows the trials of his career as well as Shuichi's romance with the distant, mysterious Yuki Eiri, a famous novelist.
This series is packed with fantastic characters, hilarious plot twists, angst, and many helpings of shamelessly sweet romantic moments as Shu slowly but steadily melts Yuki's cold heart. The animation in Gravitation is good, and the music is very, very catchy. Additionally, the DVDs are gorgeously formatted and have some great extras.
(My only slight grouse with the series? The audience is denied any scenes of physical affection between the romantic leads, outside of a few kisses and pounces. Ah, well, for all that and more you can always track down the original brilliant manga by Maki Murakami.)
You may go into this series a bitter cynic, but like Yuki you'll find Shuichi has just walked right into your heart and made himself at home using nothing more than innocence, honesty, and hopeless romanticism.
All in all, a fantastic (and addictive) series, from beginning to end! |

| anime roles voiced by seiyuu Inoue Kazuhiko, because I just can't get enough of that man's voice. He could read his shopping list and it would be sexy. Currently voicing Hatake Kakashi in Naruto, here are just a few of his previous works: |
