I wish I could give this a better rating. It's very interesting how this movie got made - two friends with day jobs programmed scenes into the X-Box shooting game Halo, dubbed voice-overs with friends, and released it first over the Internet, and now over DVD. True, all the "actors" are wearing identical (aside from the color) sets of armor, but it's mostly possible to forget that you're watching a video game, and focus on the action. I hope that as such computer games grow more sophisticated, machinima is a growing genre for such weekend film directors.
The problem with it is, the script is just terrible. OK it's true the comic timing is there, and the story is mostly well-paced, but the humor is essentially sitcom level, and not a very good sitcom at that. I had already heard every single joke used in the entire DVD, and all the situations felt recycled.
So if you're interested in machinima, as I am, it's still worth renting to see what it's all about. However, I thought this DVD was more a novelty item than anything. |

Join two groups of soldiers stationed on a forgotten planetary outpost as they kill time in an effort to survive (while doing as little work as possible). Think of Red vs. Blue as sort of a collision between M*A*S*H, Office Space and a science fiction movie. Some of the humor gets a bit sophmoric, but generally the comic timing is fantastic.
This series of short films is a great example of "machinima," or movies created using avatars in a video or computer game. The point of view of one avatar is used as the "camera," and other "players" become actors in the movie.
Note: this should probably be rated PG-13 or R for strong language. |
