I can't add much to Talltale's review, but I wanted to help keep this film circulating because I think it is excellent and important. If you have been avoiding it because you expect it will contain strident propaganda from Al-Jazeera--or from the filmmakers--fear not. The filmmakers allow the players to speak for themselves, including the young American Information Officer (or whatever he's called) and what they have to say about war, Iraq, journalism, the Arab world and the USA is individual and nuanced. Whatever your politics, this one will give you lots to think about. I suggest viewing at least the first few of the "deleted scenes" as well.

My Five Opinions:

1. That shot of George Bush exiting the helicopter with his dogs probably bolstered the opinions of a devout Muslim or two.
2. I find it hard to believe the US would bomb Al-Jazeera. Not that it isn't possible--just hard to believe.
3. I can see why people hate Donald Rumsfeld.
4. Looks like the key to war reporting is access.
5. I never thought about what a very secular organization Al-Jazeera is.

CONTROL ROOM is fascinating. Not the broadside against the U.S. that certain right-wing critics have insisted, this is a much more balanced look at those first few weeks of our war against Iraq from a news organization that is, though Arab, definitely more international in perspective than most anything we have on TV here at home. It is even more shocking now, than it was a year ago, to hear Bush and Rumsfeld ranting their ridiculous spiels. Seeing and hearing from our captured soldiers is a profoundly moving experience, as is confronting some of the havoc we have wreaked against the Iraqi people. All this made me realize again how foolish our government is to try to "spin" and control everything and thus prevent us from observing the larger picture. Do yourself a favor; rent this one and learn.
