Synopsis
Part romantic comedy and part black comedy, director Yann Samuell's 2003 feature film debut Jeux d'Enfants (Love Me if You Dare) follows the exploits of two young would-be lovers as they go from childhood to adulthood with themselves as the greatest hurdle to their own happiness. Julien and Sophie first meet at the age of eight when both are undergoing great trauma: Julien is watching his mother die and Sophie has become the focus of intense hazing at the hands of some fellow schoolmates. On one fateful day, Julien decides to stick up for Sophie and pulls a practical joke on her tormentors. Henceforth, the two embark on a close friendship that revolves around daring each other to pull increasingly audacious practical jokes, rather than on the seemingly obvious intimate relationship they seem dangerously close to discovering at any moment. Jeux d'Enfants was selected for inclusion into the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival as well as that same year's Telluride International Film Festival. ~ Ryan Shriver, All Movie Guide

Love means never having to say you've lost by talltale October 17, 2004 - 8:53 AM PDT

I often accuse the French of being perverse (which I do not mean in a negative way: "perverse" can be bracing and enjoyable). LOVE ME IF YOU DARE gives perversity full rein and, in the process, has offended more than a few viewers and critics. Well, tant pis, as the French sometimes say. This story of obsessive love in high gear may not be a classic, but compared to what passes for most love stories from Hollywood, it certainly is. Gorgeously filmed and with two of France's most talented and attractive performers in the lead roles, the movie delves into areas we would rather not probe: obsession, selfishness, narcissism and more. But because the film is so pretty and light on its feet, it keeps confusing us into imagining that it's a love story--all the better to keep knocking us off our own feet. (Maybe it IS a love story--if you believe love is all about winning.) Certainly not for every taste, this remains a movie on which any true foreign/independent film buff will want to take a chance.

Movies in the GC catalog that were shown at the Seattle Int. Film Festival 2004 which I saw. I'll update this regularly as the films I saw get listed in the catalog or I see the films which have been shown during the festival.
