The producers took the TV show and condensed it down fairly admirably while adding new elements (including new "Blue"), and they did leave us with a story. It's just not the story from the TV show. The viewer can generally follow the plot, but the beginning and the ending suffer the most due to the cuts taken. We lose much of Yugi's backstory in the beginning that explain not only his actions later in the show, but the actions of others who need him for very specific reasons. A very key player who evolves into Yugi's nemesis, and upon whom a large part of the TV show hinges, makes only a cameo.

Marlene's relationship with Yugi is forced, again due to time constraints. This is perhaps the saddest commentary, as we miss the subtle changes in her character as she evolves emotionally from a hard-core grunt to the human being she once was, thanks in large part to Yugi's influence.

Invest your time in the TV show if you haven't seen "Blue Gender" yet, or at the very least, rent the first two dvds before you watch this. If you have seen the TV version, you probably won't like the alternate ending here. I didn't.
