Italian filmmaker Ermanno Olmi's Tree of the Wooden Clogs covers a period of twelve months, dividing its time between three peasant families, all of whom work on the estate of an all-but-absentee landlord. Special emphasis is given the interrelationships between the various family members and their neighbors. Tree of the Wooden Clogs was honored with the Golden Palm award at the Cannes Film Festival. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

| The tree of Wooden Clogs is an interesting film, which shows peasant life from the upper Po River Valley just before the end of the 19th Century. It was taken from stories the director's grandmother told him. The film is exceptionally long, but not burdensome to watch. It is like traveling back in time and place and actually living the life moment to moment, an amateur anthropologist's delight. The actors are excellent and express great warmth. Quite similar and equal to "Pelle the Conqueror" I thought, except for the different location. For those who have the time I recommend seeing the reviews at amazon.com/dvd, mostly rated very highly. I agree. |
