Debuting in Japan on January 8, 1998, the pulse-pounding anime series Outlaw Star was set in the future, when to be a space outlaw was considered the ne plus ultra of prestige. Earthbound mechanic Gene Starwind got his chance to be such an outlaw when he was assigned to commandeer the high-tech space vessel Outlaw Star. Unfortunately, the vessel was stolen by space pirates, who were anxious to ascertain the contents of a mysterious box secreted somewhere on the ship. Partnered with fellow mechanic Jim Hawking and the beauteous Melfina, Gene endeavored to recapture the Outlaw Star and locate the all-important box before the pirates could get their hands on it. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The adventure continues in episodes 5 - 9 and this series does not disappoint. Solid storytelling, good character development, good action sequences integrated into the storytelling. This is not a moody or "artsy" anime, just a great action adventure where you're drawn into the universe and can't wait to see what happens next. Now... where's Volume 2?? :-) (In case this matters to some review readers, I was watching this anime in Japanese with English subtitles. Don't know how good the English dubbing is.)

Good characterizations, good storytelling, good cliffhangers at the end of each episode. Although there are guns, I didn't feel like there was gratuitous violence -- some animes are so bloody that it's nauseating, but this one never dwelled on the action scenes. This anime relies on solid storytelling and multidimensional characters to get you involved in this world. This DVD contains episodes 1 - 5. I can't wait to see Disk 2 of 2!

Outlaw Star is reliable action anime. It is fast paced and has cool guns. The story is predictable as are the characters, but that is not always a bad thing. Outlaw Star is straight forward anime, that is worth a watch. I really wouldn't compare it to Cowboy Bebop which is much more moody and stylized. Make sure you watch it in Japanese, the sound track changes considerably in English.
