| If you remember the 70s, "Sweet Sweetback" and the many blaxploitation flicks that followed its success, you'll want to see BAADASSSSS!, Melvin Van Peebles homage to that time, his father and his father's famous film. I wish I liked the resulting movie better than I do; it seems too slick by half and the younger Van Peebles isn't up the acting challenge here. His body, which is on display a good part of the time, is also far too buffed to look like any real man (except a professional body-builder) in the 70s. The film is easy to watch for most of its running time and the last 15 minutes are quite riveting. I suspect it might have worked better as a documentary than as the fictionalized account seen here. Still, it's important that kids today know what existed back then and what didn't exist (rap, in-your-face attitude, more opportunity and black superstars--other than Sidney Poitier) until the elder Van Peebles helped lay the groundwork. |
