Directed by Nick Cassavetes, this adaptation of author Nicholas Sparks' bestselling novel revolves around Noah Calhoun's (James Garner) regular visits to a female patron (Gena Rowlands) of an area nursing home. Rather than bore her with the inanities of everyday life, Calhoun reads from an old, faded notebook containing the sweeping account of a young couple (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) whose love affair was tragically put to a halt after their separation in the midst of World War II. Seven years later, the couple was reunited, and, despite having taken radically different paths, they found themselves unable to resist the call of a second chance. The Notebook also features Joan Allen, Sam Shepard, and Kevin Connolly. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

| An insult to any family who's ever had to deal with senile dementia, THE NOTEBOOK may begin as though it has a modicum of "smarts," but early on, you'll detect signs of simplemindedness and sleaze--as in the "courtship" of the two youngsters, when, instead of giving us any intelligent dialog that might root these characters in reality, the movie keeps cutting to quick, dialog-free flashes of laughter and frolicking and cutesy behavior. Then things get worse. Allie keeps changing her mind between the two very hunky men until her final choice of one over the other becomes utterly meaningless. The final insult dovetails with the final scene. (Spoiler ahead, but how do you deal with this movie without mentioning the following?) You can bet your booty that the very religious, right-wing nuts who are currently condemning "Million Dollar Baby" over its assisted suicide issue are embracing this piece of drivel--in which the love-conquers-all couple "will" themselves--yes, they do--into the next world. By the way, the actors here all do their level best. But the two Nicks (Sparks and Cassavetes) have one hell of a lot to answer for. |

| Movies in the GC catalog that were shown at the Seattle Int. Film Festival 2004 which I saw. I'll update this regularly as the films I saw get listed in the catalog or I see the films which have been shown during the festival. |
