| What THE INTENDED has going for it is mostly ambience: dark and dirty, hot and humid Malaysia in the 1920s. It also boasts a good cast (Mc Teer, Fricker, Dukakis and some good, if lesser-known, male actors). What is doesn't have is an interesting story, even though the movie is full of sex, violence (murder by ant--how's THAT for originality!) and a nutty family. The screenplay (co-written by Mc Teer) dawdles unforgivably over one tiresome thing after another (dare you to refrain from the fast-forward button) and, finally, offers up a conclusion of silly clichés. The director, Kristian Levring, is a Dogma-ite; this may explain a few things to a few people. But it didn't help me much. |
