| Is SPIDER MAN 2 better than the original SM? Often, but not always. Can you turn a super-hero movie into a romance? A social tract? Sure, but you do it at the expense of those adrenaline rushes that are the raison d'etre of action movies. As good as Dunst and Maguire are in their roles, the romance can never be as important to a film like this as the action set pieces. Nonetheless, the movie tries harder than most to have it all ways, and sometime it succeeds. The best sequence is the entire subway scene, as Spidey saves the passengers, and they return the favor. This is wonderful stuff, and thankfully, the moviemakers don't wring the sentimentality dry or push it any farther than the idea and moment can sustain. I'm up for number 3. |
