This is a nice-looking film, with a consistent and original visual style, but unfortunately the plot isn't much to speak of. It's pretty generic F/SF stuff without any real twists, other than some minor details. It's worth watching for the eye candy if you're into that sort of thing, but I suspect many people will be turned off by the unexciting plot.
I don't even LIKE anime that much.

I can't believe this movie never saw wide American theatrical release. The action takes place in a terrifically vivid, spectacularly alien setting, and it's obvious tremendous amounts of work went into nearly every object in the movie. While it does suffer from some of the typical scifi/fantasy problems -- the plot isn't the best; not everything really makes sense; some questions are left unanswered -- this movie is a visually stunning and strongly engaging panorama of weirdness. My only regret is that I saw it on a tiny screen; there's just too much detail to waste that way. Also, the main character's, er, costuming is a little distracting. But in a good way.
