Synopsis
Award-winning Russian filmmaker Alexander Sokurov (Russian Ark) directs the intimate drama Father and Son (Otets I Syn), a companion piece to his 1996 film Mother and Son. Following the death of his wife, a handsome father (Andrej Shetinin) shares an apartment with his son (Alexei Neimyshev). The son goes to military school to train to be a soldier, while the father remembers his own history as a soldier. The father and son develop a strong emotional and physical attachment to one another. The son's girlfriend starts to grow jealous of the relationship. The son wants to spend more time with the other boys in the military school, but the father doesn't want to let go of him. Composer Andrei Sigle provides the original score, based on themes by Peter Tchaikovsky. Father and Son was shown in competition at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

Of course he can blame the audience... by khoruzhenko June 9, 2008 - 10:28 PM PDT

After having gone through the pain of watching this movie twice, i still don't get what does homoerotic theme add to the story.
I read Sokurov saying in his interview that only perverts can interpret loving and carrying relations between the father and the son as homo-erotic... whatever... obviously he doesn't cast a doubt on his ability to tell the story.
Anyway, i gave this movie One star for mediocre dialogues, poor acting (made them even more unbearable to listen), "in-your-face" symbols and allegories.

Sokurov's Father and Son is a film so charged and so diffuse, it can leave one thinking that they are the one imposing an inappropriate and sexually taboo theme to it. The images complement the motif impeccably, always filmed through obscurity. Father and Son never feels for an instant that it exists in any sort of tangible environment, leaving the viewer to ultimately interpret what has taken place in this highly sexual relationship between two men.

FATHER AND SON is one of the most homoerotic movies I've ever seen and also one of the strangest and most beautiful--while never explicitly sexual. The director has cast his film with actors close enough in age to be older and younger brothers, and their bodies are constantly on display as they gaze into each other's eyes with enormous affection and longing--but for what? The movie calls up thoughts and feelings that are Oedipal, sexual, loving and mysterious. Women play a part, but only at a distance. The locations and scenery are quietly spectacular, too. Anyone expecting another "Russian Ark" will be surprised but perhaps not disappointed, for Aleksandr Sokurov is clearly a director of talent, artistry and imagination. An additional viewing may be in order; also a talk with someone Russian who can perhaps explain the gene/behavior/history of Russian men that might account for what's on view here. While I admit that all cultures--and humans--are screwy in their own way, still, the screw loose here seems kind of major. Once you've seen this one, give us your review, if only for comparative purposes.
