A lot of the films that we see based on Viet Nam are sometimes very left-leaning and take an anti-war approach, viewing it as a great tragedy; however, this particular film is unique because it is more of a right-wing view of the war and the reasons behind it. I felt that this offered a breath of fresh air when it comes to the viewing of film, and the war in general. It presented a very interesting, emotional, and heartfelt view of the Viet Nam war from the perspective of a Green Beret played by legendary action film star, John Wayne, as well as a young Vietnamese boy. Their tragic tale is one that perhaps characterizes the hope of many of the people's views that were left of the war in 1968, and also the rationale for the event; I felt that this film truly can give one more of a unique perspective due to the year that it was made and the sentiments embodied by it.

The blunt-force emotion of the film's basis combined with the very fitting soundtrack (featuring Sgt. Barry Saddler's song by the same name) is a great film for any patriotic person to see. However, I would recommend this film to anyone because of the informative view it often takes of the war (informative in a sense that some of the ideas presented in the film are not the ones that you were taught). The scenes where John Wayne is speaking with an agent of the press about the war are particularly informative and an interesting take on the issue.

With a heart-breaking story and an interesting political twist thrown on it, and a terrific role that was truly scripted for John Wayne and well executed, it is a good film for anyone to see.
