The second chapter in the "Bourne Trilogy," based on Robert Ludlum's best-selling espionage novels, reaches the screen in this sequel to the 2002 thriller The Bourne Identity. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) has abandoned his life as a CIA assassin and has been traveling beneath the agency's radar, eventually reconnecting with Marie Kreutz (Franka Potente), the woman he loves. But Bourne is haunted by vivid dreams and troubling memories of his days as a killer, and he's not certain how much really happened and how much is a product of his imagination. When Bourne is led out of hiding by circumstances beyond his control, he must reconcile his past and present as he struggles to keep Marie out of harm's way and foil an international incident with dangerous consequences. The Bourne Supremacy also features Joan Allen as one of Bourne's superiors, while Julia Stiles and Brian Cox reprise their roles as intelligence agents from the first film. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

It's good to see that The Bourne Supremacy fixes the two main problems with The Bourne Identity:
1. the utter lack of chemistry between Matt Damon and Franka Potente 2. the amazingly unexciting car chases.
Although I generally love Franka, thankfully she doesn't play a major part in this one, sparing us from having to watch them try to interact. As for the car chases they're a lot more exciting this time around, which is also a major improvement over the first installment.
It seems that director Paul Greengrass just does a better job with the action genre than Doug Liman does, as it's a much tighter ship this time out, very crisp and entertaining. It's no masterpiece, but certainly worth a couple of hours. |

| Is THE BOURNE SUPREMACY better than "The Bourne Identity"? As with the recent "Spider Man" sequel, first and second segments are pretty much a draw--the latter perhaps a tad below the original. This one moves faster and is non-stop (I kept looking for a spot to do a bathroom break or get dessert and ended the movie with a full bladder and an unfulfilled sweet tooth). As polished and professional a piece of action/super-spy filmmaking as I've seen, "Bourne Two" also proves the limitations of the genre. At film's end you may find yourself catching your breath and shrugging your shoulders at the same time. |
