While the Fox News cable network has promoted itself as a "fair and balanced" news outlet -- so much so that they've even trademarked the phrase -- not everyone believes that they're living up to their slogan, and this activist documentary by filmmaker Robert Greenwald takes a close look at the political perspective of Fox's coverage. Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism examines the right-wing slant of Fox News' reporting, as represented in stories the network chooses to cover and their shoehorning of editorial opinion into stories, revealed in interviews with former Fox employees and several noted journalists (including Walter Cronkite) who discuss the pro-conservative, anti-Democratic views of the channel's management and how they're manifested in their programming. The film also puts talk show host Bill O'Reilly under the microscope and offers potent examples of his frequently abrasive interviewing style. Production of Outfoxed was supported in part by the leftist political action network Moveon.org. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
When future histories look back at the radical changes currently afoot in the film industry, Robert Greenwald will warrant more than a footnote. Driven by a passionate urgency, he has introduced an entirely new distribution model with his documentaries Unprecedented, Uncovered, and now, Outfoxed: Straight to DVD, straight to the people. On the eve of the theatrical premiere of Outfoxed after 100,000 copies have been sold on DVD, Jonathan Marlow caught up with the very busy, very dedicated director. Full article >>

AAARRRGGGG. I just finished watching "OutFoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism" and I had to unpack my angry eyes. This is all stuff that I "knew" but didn't know. I've been operating under the rule of thumb that if you wanted to know what was going on in the world, you couldn't go to any of the major news outlets, especially FOX. Now I'm incensed. I'll have to watch it again before I start spouting statistics and I'll have to independently review those statistics before I espouse them but let me say that ANY person in these United States that buys the "Fair and Balanced" slogan of FOX has their head FIRMLY imbedded in their posterior.

OUTFOXED makes its point (again and again), but it's not as effective as Greenwald's own "Outrageous," about the war in Iraq, and not nearly as good a documentary as "Unprecedented," which covers the stolen election of 2000. I agree with most of what is said but still spent my time here without learning much that I didn't already know. However, if the film helps open or change even a few minds about what is going on in our country, all the better.

Really frightening, hard-hitting investigation of the decidedly un-fair and balanced Fox News network is certainly biased but less so than the channel itself. It's the clip montages that really drive the point home. Most famously, the segment featuring Bill O'Reilly saying he's only told a guest to shut up once, followed by a series of clips showing quite the opposite. And my own personal favorite, the "some people say" montage, which is amusing, but I wouldn't make light of the point that comes from watching it; this gets at the crux of what is the truly shoddy journalism of the channel, the facts take a backseat to the viewpoint, and, as director Greenwald capably demonstrates in OUTFOXED, the line is blurred dangerously. Even less defensible is O'Reilly's boorish behavior versus the son of a 9/11 victim. It's a fascinating, disturbing account of TV journalism gone awry, and should serve as a massive wake-up call to the once slumbering American left. (Also would make a good discussion point for any well-organized journalistic ethics and critical thinking course.) See it and then watch the real FNC for a few minutes for a demonstration.
