Takashi Miike's Shinjuku Triad Society is the first of a three-film series known as the Black Society Trilogy. Corrupt cop Tatsuhito disregards any and all regulations in his attempt to bring down Wang, an inhumanely cruel criminal who lords over an empire that makes its fortune from the debasing of human beings. The cast includes Kippei Shiina, Tomorowo Taguchi, Takeshi Caesar, and Shinsuke Izutu. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

| A relatively early film for Miike (only his 12th!), Shinjuku Triad Society is cut from the same cloth as lurid potboilers like Fudoh: the next generation and City of Lost Souls, rather than his more recent genre-destroying mind-f*cks like Dead or Alive, Audition and Gozu. Personally, i like the latter category better, if only because they're movies like no one else is dreaming of making. But, i still have to recommend this one. It's like Fukasaku directing a James Ellroy story, only with a deranged logic and sense of humor that belong exclusively to Miike. Also of note is a commentary track by Tom Mes, of Midnight Eye, who gives dry (if incredibly knowledgable) facts and insights over scenes like police brutally butt raping information out of suspects. It's kind of fun watching someone try to put a intellectual spin on that type of thing. |
