Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts (Disc 1 of 9) (1958)
Perhaps best-known for the musical West Side Story, composer Leonard Bernstein was one of the most accomplished and influential musicians of the 20th century. For fifteen years, beginning in 1958, Bernstein attempted to turn the youth of America on to music through a series of televised performances called Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts. Disc 1 contains three episodes. In the episode "What Does Music Mean?" Bernstein attempts to explain how one goes about discerning the meanings and intended emotional responses behind specific pieces by such composers as Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Rossini, and Ravel. In "What Is American Music?" Bernstein explains the influences behind and elements that comprise several different styles of American music, including select pieces by such composers as Copland, Gilbert, Gershwin, and Dvorak. Finally, in the episode "What is Orchestration?"
