There was a lot of outrage from X-Philes when CC 3rd series Harsh Realm was unceremoniously cancelled by FOX after only a few episodes. I mean this was Chris Carter right, the man behind X-Files, anything he touch should turn to gold.
Well if the 13 episodes in this box set are any indication Harsh Realm was doomed to obscurity even if the networks hadn't gotten to it first. There are good things about this series; good premise, decent characters. But they are outweighed by the bad. The show is too X-Files-ish. You think from the premise that they'd stick to things that can only be explained by them being in a game. But by the fourth episode the series begins to diverge into the supernatural; Hobbes' mother dying inside the game seems to have a connection to his real mother dying outside the game. A distinct lack of continuity; the characters seem to hop from state to state at will. They can lose their weapons in one epsidoe but mysteriously regain the very same weapons in the next. Then there are things that simply make no sense from the get-go. Why do people vanish when they're killed? If you can change your entire appearance at will, why doesn't Mike, Hobbes and Florence just get their hands on one of those digiwands and make themselves look completely different? There are so many inconsistencies in his show I don't see it would have lasted more than a season anyway. Then again Charmed is still on the air. |

Not good. Too slow, too ordinary. Ordinary cast, ordinary direction, ordinary writing, nothing special. Next. |
