Forget the mumbo-jumbo explanation to what THE TESSERACT refers that begins this fascinating film. You'll probably find, as I did, that it simply registers pretentious and fairly meaningless by the time your reach the conclusion. Directed by Oxide Pang (one of the brothers who gifted us with "The Eye"), this is one of the most visually interesting and beautiful films of the past several years. Although it combines fairly standard tropes of the thriller/drug/gangster genre, the movie spins them in ways that are less typical and sentimental than the norm, and its visuals are--in their dark, unsettling way--quite ravishing. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is OK (this gorgeous actor looks the least attractive that I've ever seen him); Saskia Reeves is excellent, and the young actor who plays the hotel "helper" is a definite find. The locations are stunning, too, as are the exceedingly vibrant views of Bangkok street life. Certainly not for every taste (it's "arty" but to a purpose), this is a film I'm very glad I saw.

One take from SIFF 2004
Movies in the GC catalog that were shown at the Seattle Int. Film Festival 2004 which I saw. I'll update this regularly as the films I saw get listed in the catalog or I see the films which have been shown during the festival.
