| On going to the theatre when the movie was first released, I was very excited in seeing the great cast in this film. I was horrified by the characters in the film....the number of one night stands and un-romantic love in this film left very little empathy for the characters covered through the scenes. Despite the historical setting and bad acting this movie will only leave you feeling a bit anti-semetic when coming out of the cinema. |

Plagued with a short attention span, it isn't very often that I can sit through a 3-hour movie and find myself continually and thoroughly engaged. Sunshine has so many strong elements that work so well together - from the compelling characters portrayed by wonderful actors to the beautiful cinematography (lush and sunshiny or sparse and grey, depending on the period in the characters' lives) to the gorgeous costumes and sets. The pacing is just right, and so many events happen in such a quick progression that 2 whole hours passed before I checked to see how much was left. I probably wouldn't have even checked had I not been so disturbed by the particular series of events and hoping that things would get better for the characters I had come to love. And that's one of the most special things about this movie: the characters are so real and live so deeply, and I felt their joy, their frustration, their love, and their pain. Ralph Fiennes was incredible as he managed to successfully depict three generations of men and imbue each character with his own very distinctive personality. Each time he showed up in a new incarnation, he looked different and acted different and it was never "Oh, there he is again..." And while Fiennes was so very fine, my favorite character was Valerie: a wildly creative and passionate woman with incredible strength and a feisty demeanor. Pretty much all of the women in the film have enviable poise and strength, and that balanced out the stories perfectly. And their clothes are to die for.
The film explores interpersonal relationships on many levels, several political movements, and some of the various ways that religious beliefs affect individuals, families, groups, and countries. I laughed, I cried, I learned, and I felt. But never once did I yawn.
