Synopsis
One of the only survivors of a man-made plague joins forces with a team of private warriors in a bid to save what's left of the Earth in this sequel to Resident Evil, the big-screen adaptation of the popular video game. Picking up where the first film left off, Resident Evil: Apocalypse finds Alice (Milla Jovovich) still battling the living dead who are overtaking Raccoon City, inoculated with an anti-virus by the nefarious and all-powerful Umbrella Corporation (in addition to the virus itself). Alice encounters Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), a former member of Umbrella's internal defense team. Forming an alliance with mercenary-for-hire Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr) and his cohorts, this tiny band of survivors seeks out Dr. Charles Ashford (Jared Harris), Umbrella's top scientist and one of the only men with the know-how to find a solution to the zombie menace; however, they discover that Ashford's cooperation comes with a price -- the scientist's daughter Angie (Sophie Vavasseur) is missing, and he'll help Alice and her partners only if Angie is returned to him safe and sound. Resident Evil: Apocalypse was the first solo directorial credit for Alexander Witt, who previously distinguished himself as a cinematographer and second-unit director. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

I hope you're a fan of the games... by Moriarty December 6, 2005 - 11:03 AM PST

I'm going to start this review with the disclaimer that I'm a huge fan of the video game franchise that this movie was based on. That being said, I'm not sure where this movie would appeal to anyone else.
As a zombie movie, there's nothing new. Slow, lumbering corpses are easily dispatched with a bullet to the head. There are a few new creatures, but nothing that lasts very long. Characters are dispatched by the various enemies as the movie moves along. And it's not real hard to pick who's not going to make it. The one very huge bone they throw to the fans, Nemesis, was pretty decent, but was under-used and had a pretty cliched ending.
As an action movie, this wasn't bad. There were a few pretty decent stunts and lots of gunplay. And Milla Jovovich, who makes a pretty hot heroine is joined by Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine, the heroine from the original Resident Evil game. So you get two hot, ass-kicking babes for the price of one.
The one jarring bit for me was the ending. When you figure the movie was just about over, they tack on another 10 minutes that just serves as a huge lead in to another sequel.
For me the best parts of this movie were recognizing the bits and pieces that came from the various games. Weapons, characters, and even some scenes were lifted from the different games. All of that was enough to hold my interest and keep me entertained. But will it be enough to keep you happy?

RESIDENT EVIL: APOCAPLYSE is at least as good (read: as much dumb, full-of-action fun) as the original. Milla Jovovich does another nice turn as the "heroine," and again she's surrounded with interesting characters played by good actors (Sienna Guillory, Oded Fehr, Jared Harris, Sandrine Holt, Mike Epps, Germany's Thomas Kretschmann and even Britain's Iain Glen). If you can get by one whopper of a mistake (when the "Monster" first attacks, nobody--not even the crack SWAT-like team--ever aims at his head or eyes; instead they just keep shooting at his metal-plated body. Smart, huh?), most of the rest of this movie is tight, well-plotted, perfectly paranoid and often clever and funny. Note the delicious crunching sounds made when villain #1 meets his demise. Other than Film Threat and the NY Times' Dave Kehr, the critics really had their knives out for his one. Sometimes I think they tune-out their critical faculties from the word "go" (or maybe the word "undead"), or simply are unable to appreciate a decent zombie/action movie. Granted, this does take some sort of stamina--which, fortunately, I'll bet a bunch of you members possess. In spades.

Such a lame title for a list, but an eclectic taste deserves an eclectic list. Be forewarned, I have superficial tastes.
