| With so much would-be political correctness running rampant, it can be bracing to find yourself watching a movie that doesn't give a flying fornication how truly demeaning it is. BULGARIAN LOVERS is just such a film. All the Spanish gay men here are nelly queens who swish and cavort like there's no tomorrow, while the Bulgarian characters are conniving, souless "users" who cruise and then abuse their insignificant others. "I love you more than my life," says the poor enamored Spanish schnook to his Bulgarian boyfriend, who replies, "I love me more than your life, too." Fortunately, the main character has enough distance and irony to chuckle at himself, and so will you. The movie is quite light on its feet for such somber subject matter: you'll find folk selling everything here from sex to drugs to nuclear naughties. Are you enticed, just a little? Thought so; have fun. |
