As Good a Movie as You'll Ever See

When the technical shortcomings of making a movie using circa 1936 technology are considered, this movie is nothing short of a masterpiece. It began as a stage play that Bogart and Howard starred in, and performed hundreds of times. This explains the polished performances by the two leads.

I won't go into the plot, other than to say it will hold your interest, and is believable, in a movie-logic sort of way.

The diner where the movie mostly takes place becomes a microcosm of society, in a Gilligan's Island sort of way, but more serious and gritty. This film has something for everyone. There is action, there is philosophy, there is romance, there is comedy, there is suspense, and there is drama. Plus great dialog and great acting. And none of those elements seem to have lost any of their impact over the passage of time.

This movie reminds me somewhat of the 1930's version of "Lost Horizon". If you have seen and enjoyed that film, you are certain to enjoy this one, and if you like this film, rent "Lost Horizon" ASAP.

It is also great to see Bogart in one of his last "villian" roles. If you like Bogart as a hero, wait until you see him as the bad guy.
