Synopsis
RuPaul narrates this affectionate look at everyone's favorite televangelist/living cosmetic display: Tammy Faye Bakker. The eldest of eight children in rural Minnesota, Tammy Faye married Jim Bakker in 1960, and soon they found a following on the gospel circuit. This eventually led to a gig on Christian media mogul Pat Robertson's first television shows, including the ever-popular 700 Club. Perhaps jealous of their rising profile, Robertson soon usurped the show for himself. The Bakkers went on to co-found the Trinity Broadcasting Network, until that too was wrestled away from them by investors. Riding a tide of religious fundamentalism, the Bakkers reached their gaudy heights with the PTL Network and the spinoff Christian theme park Heritage USA. Then the roof caved in. Jim was forced to pay hush money to future Playboy centerfold model Jessica Hahn and then was submitted to rival Jerry Falwell's hostile take-over of the network. Soon Jim was in jail for fraud, and Tammy was at Betty Ford for addiction to prescription drugs. This film was screened at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

I have found a whole new respect for Tammy Faye Bakker, or I guess it's Tammy Faye Messner now (she's remarried). I had no idea. Tammy Faye has been through a lot. My favorite quote from the movie, "Tammy Faye is survivor, man. After we all blow ourselves up in a nuclear haulocaust there will be roaches, Cher, and Tammy Faye." And with all that she's been through she is still breaking out into song when times are bad. I love Tammy Faye after this movie.

There are interviews with Tammy Faye as well as Jim Bakker. Jerry Falwell wouldn't be interviewed because he is a total scumbag, and once the world finds out I believe he will fall harder than we've seen any other christian evangelist fall. Anyway, I think that by avoiding being interviewed he is was hoping that it would delay that day.

The interview with Jim Bakker is interesting. He explains the embeselment a bit. He claims that the whole building of the Heritage Village got out of hand without him really realizing it. He was happy to have the support of so many people, so they started doing more and more, their budget got up to a million a day at one point. So Jim Bakker just went on TV asking for more and more money, till eventually it just came crashing down.

There's also a lot of info on what happen to them and how Jerry Fallwell screwed them over hardcore. I had no idea that Jerry Falwell was such a slimey pile of fuck. For instance, when the PTL club went under, Jim Bakker was relieved to have their friend and supporter Jerry Falwell come and help them out of the mess.

One instance of Falwell's trickery; he sent a mutual friend as a messenger to Tammey Faye. He said that he wanted to take care of Jim and Tammy after this whole thing was over, since they had spent their lives building it. He asked her to write on a piece of paper the things that the board had told them they could have and he would see to it that they would continue to get what they had been promised. He then took that piece of paper to a press conference saying, "I have in my hand here a note from Tammy Faye asking for additional comensation. She would like a $300,000/yr salary, a house in ..." blah blah. "I see no repentace here." She of course was not asking for these things, but Jerry used it to ensure that she would not be able to take back her TV network.

Also, Tammy Faye publically accepting of gay people. She says God loves them just like everyone else so she does too. Anyway, you have to watch this movie, it will completely replace you view of Tammy Faye.
